- • Lead day-to-day operation, maintenance, and calibration of a fleet of 3D printers supporting robotics prototyping efforts at OpenAI
- • Develop and maintain standardized workflows for engineering teams to submit, prioritize, track, and receive 3D-printed prototype parts
- • Prepare, process, and optimize print jobs across multiple additive manufacturing technologies including FDM, SLA, SLS, MJF, and PolyJet
- • Perform post-processing operations such as support removal, surface finishing, bonding, machining, dyeing, and assembly preparation for printed parts
- • Inspect completed parts for dimensional accuracy, cosmetic quality, and structural integrity prior to delivery to engineering teams
- • Provide technical guidance to mechanical, electrical, and prototype engineers on material selection, print orientation, tolerancing, and design for additive manufacturing
- • Manage inventory of printing materials, consumables, spare parts, and maintenance supplies to ensure maximum printer uptime and minimize workflow disruptions
- • Assist with mechanical builds, subsystem integration, and general prototype technician tasks across robotic systems beyond additive manufacturing
- • Troubleshoot and resolve machine failures, process inconsistencies, and print quality issues across the full spectrum of additive manufacturing systems
- • Maintain a clean, organized, safe, and highly functional prototyping lab environment in compliance with safety and operational standards
- • Collaborate closely with cross-functional engineering teams to support rapid hardware iteration cycles in a fast-paced robotics development environment
- • Ensure timely delivery of high-quality prototype components to meet tight project deadlines and evolving design requirements
- • Continuously improve lab efficiency by identifying bottlenecks, implementing process enhancements, and documenting best practices for additive manufacturing
- • Support general lab operations including tool organization, safety protocol enforcement, and equipment upkeep for a multidisciplinary robotics prototyping team
- • Work in-person five days a week at the San Francisco facility to ensure direct, hands-on support for engineering teams and immediate response to prototyping needs
🎯 Requirements
- • 4+ years of experience operating additive manufacturing systems in prototyping, robotics, product development, or manufacturing environments
- • Hands-on experience with multiple 3D printing technologies including FDM, SLA, SLS, MJF, or PolyJet
- • Familiarity with additive manufacturing materials, post-processing methods, and prototype finishing techniques
- • Experience supporting hardware engineering teams in fast-paced, high-turnover development environments
- • Demonstrated ability to manage concurrent prototype requests with precision and reliability
- • Strong mechanical aptitude and comfort with general electromechanical assembly and robotics hardware systems
