- • Serve as a bilingual Amharic-English Video-Phone Interpreter, facilitating real-time verbal interpretation between Amharic and English speakers across healthcare, 911, law enforcement, court, government, education, insurance, finance, utilities, travel, hospitality, and general business industries.
- • Deliver accurate, impartial, and culturally sensitive interpretation during video and audio sessions, ensuring no omissions, additions, or personal opinions are introduced.
- • Maintain professional demeanor throughout all interpreting sessions, including high-stress situations such as emergency 911 calls, end-of-life conversations, pregnancy termination discussions, and matters involving sexual orientation or gender expression.
- • Respond promptly to on-demand interpreting calls, adhering to strict timing and availability requirements during scheduled work hours.
- • Utilize a dedicated personal device—such as a Windows, macOS, ChromeOS laptop or desktop, iPadOS or Android tablet, or iOS or Android smartphone—to conduct interpreting sessions and input data as required.
- • Participate in mandatory online, video, and audio training sessions to develop industry-specific terminology and interpretation protocols for medical, legal, financial, and insurance contexts.
- • Remain neutral and detached during conversations, focusing solely on conveying meaning while avoiding direct interaction with Limited English Proficient (LEP) individuals unless explicitly permitted by the client.
- • Operate in a quiet, secure home-office environment free from background noise or distractions to ensure clear audio transmission.
- • Adhere to ASTM and ISO-certified interpretation standards and company protocols for service delivery, client confidentiality, and data security.
- • Demonstrate cultural competency by recognizing regional dialects, accents, and linguistic nuances to effectively communicate with diverse Amharic-speaking populations.
- • Maintain high accuracy through strong listening, retention, and note-taking skills during complex or rapid-fire conversations.
- • Stay current with LanguageLine Solutions’ evolving technology systems and adapt to new platforms or enhancements designed to improve service delivery.
- • Complete all interpreting assignments with precision, even during extended call durations or periods of high call volume, without compromising service quality.
- • Follow all client-specific instructions and comply with industry regulations regarding interpreter conduct, privacy, and ethical boundaries.
- • Use a headset for prolonged periods and maintain a stationary position in front of a computer and webcam for the majority of the workday.
- • Possess sufficient manual dexterity to type on a keyboard and operate a mouse with precision.
- • Be physically able to lift up to 26 lbs if required for equipment setup or relocation.
🎯 Requirements
- • Native or near-native fluency in both Amharic and English, with demonstrated cultural competency in both languages
- • High school diploma or equivalent
- • Legally authorized to work in the United States without current or future visa sponsorship
- • Minimum age of 18 years
- • Dedicated personal device (Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, iPadOS, Android, or iOS) for business use
- • High-speed internet with minimum 5 Mbps download, 3 Mbps upload, ≤300 ms ping, and ≤30 ms jitter
