Full Job Description
📋 Description
- • The Anthropic Fellows Program — The Anthropic Institute Fellows (Economics & Policy) is a 4-month, full-time research fellowship designed to foster talent in AI safety and societal impact research, with a focus on economics and policy. Fellows will conduct empirical research using external infrastructure (e.g., open-source models, public APIs) aligned with Anthropic’s research priorities, aiming to produce public outputs such as academic papers. Over 80% of past fellows have produced papers, demonstrating the program’s effectiveness in advancing impactful research.
- • Day to day, fellows will design and conduct empirical research on AI’s economic effects, develop methodological approaches for studying AI’s impact on labor markets and society, analyze offense–defense balances in AI-enabled cyber and bio capabilities, and identify metrics that could serve as early warning signals for recursive self-improvement. They will work under mentorship from experts like Maxim Massenkoff, Peter McCrory, Jack Clark, Marina Favaro, and Jim Baker, and participate in a project selection and mentor matching process to align their work with relevant research areas.
- • The program is hosted by Anthropic, PBC, a public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco, dedicated to building reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. Fellows gain access to shared workspaces in Berkeley, California, or London, UK (with remote options available in the UK, US, or Canada), and become part of a growing team of researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders committed to AI safety and societal benefit. The program emphasizes collaboration, communication, and empirical science, valuing diverse perspectives and encouraging applications from underrepresented groups.
- • Fellows can expect to gain hands-on experience in empirical AI research, strengthen their technical and communication skills, produce publishable research, and build connections within the AI safety and policy research community. Strong performance may lead to full-time offers at Anthropic (25–50% of past fellows received such offers), and the program supports fellows in pursuing impactful work elsewhere in AI safety and security.
🎯 Requirements
- • Fluent in Python programming
- • Available to work full-time on the Fellows program for 4 months
- • Have work authorization in the US, UK, or Canada and be located in that country during the program
- • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience
- • Strong background in a discipline relevant to the Economics & Policy workstream (e.g., economics, social sciences, or cybersecurity) is a plus
- • Experience in research or engineering related to AI safety, policy, or societal impacts is a plus
🏖️ Benefits
- • Weekly stipend of $3,850 USD / £2,310 GBP / CAD 4,300 (varies by country)
- • Funding for compute (~$15,000/month) and other research expenses
- • Access to shared workspaces in Berkeley, CA or London, UK (remote options available in UK, US, Canada)
- • Direct mentorship from Anthropic researchers in economics, policy, security, and society
- • Connection to the broader AI safety and security research community
- • Opportunity to produce public research outputs (e.g., paper submissions) with high likelihood of success
