📋 Description

• As a Backend Engineer at Trading 212 UK Ltd., you will play a critical role in enabling millions of users to build wealth through high-performance, resilient trading and investment platforms. Your work directly impacts the reliability and scalability of systems managing over €30 billion in assets under management for 4.5+ million clients, making your contributions essential to the company’s mission of democratizing wealth creation.
• You will own the full software development lifecycle — from understanding business problems and designing solutions to coding, testing, deploying, and monitoring — ensuring your services are performant, scalable, and maintainable in a high-stakes financial environment where downtime, latency, and data loss are unacceptable.
• You will collaborate within compact, autonomous agile teams that prioritize velocity and technical excellence, engaging in continuous learning, knowledge sharing, and honest feedback to drive both personal and organizational growth.
• Your day-to-day responsibilities include developing backend services using Java 17/Spring or Go, working with relational and NoSQL databases (PostgreSQL, MariaDB, Redis, etc.), implementing communication via HTTP/WebSockets and AMQP, leveraging Apache Kafka for messaging, and deploying containerized applications using Docker and GitLab CI/CD.
• You will design and optimize databases with deep attention to indexing, transactions, isolation levels, and locking mechanisms to ensure high throughput and data integrity under heavy load.
• You will contribute to a microservices architecture comprising over 200 services, making informed decisions about technology choices based on task appropriateness while balancing innovation with system stability.
• You will participate in requirement formulation, design reviews, code implementation, automated testing, production deployment, and observability using Grafana, Kibana, and Telegraf, ensuring end-to-end ownership and quality.

🎯 Requirements

• Good familiarity with common communication protocols including HTTP/WebSockets and AMQP, with the ability to choose the appropriate protocol based on use case.
• Prior experience with at least one commonplace web framework (language-agnostic), demonstrating ability to build and maintain backend services.
• Solid understanding of RDBMS concepts including indexing, transactions, isolation levels, and locking mechanisms, with ability to design high-performance databases.
