Backend Engineer, Senior

📋 Description

• • Architect and evolve ChowNow’s core backend services that power $1B in gross food sales for 20,000+ independent restaurants. You will own the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of high-throughput, low-latency APIs that handle menu management, order processing, payments, and third-party integrations.
• • Lead the charge on observability and reliability by instrumenting code with metrics, traces, and logs that surface actionable insights in real time. You will define SLIs/SLOs, automate alerting, and participate in blameless post-mortems to keep our platform at 99.9 %+ availability.
• • Collaborate daily with Product, Design, Data, and DevOps to translate business goals into elegant, scalable software. You will write detailed RFCs and ADRs, run architecture reviews, and mentor peers to raise the technical bar across squads.
• • Champion a culture of automated testing and continuous delivery. You will maintain >80 % unit-test coverage, drive adoption of contract tests, and refine our CI/CD pipelines so every commit can reach production safely within minutes.
• • Optimize performance and cost across our Python micro-services running on Kubernetes and AWS. You will profile hot paths, refactor data models, and introduce caching or event-driven patterns that cut latency and cloud spend.
• • Secure the platform end-to-end. You will conduct threat modeling, enforce least-privilege IAM policies, and stay ahead of OWASP Top 10 risks, ensuring PCI-DSS compliance and customer trust.
• • Ship iteratively and measure impact. Every feature you release will be A/B tested, monitored, and rolled back or ramped up based on data, directly influencing how millions of diners discover and order from local restaurants.
• • Contribute to hiring and onboarding. Within 90 days you will interview candidates, craft onboarding guides, and pair-program with new engineers to shorten their time-to-first-commit.
• • Drive cross-team initiatives that improve developer velocity—whether that’s introducing a new service template, upgrading Python runtimes, or leading guilds on GraphQL, gRPC, or event sourcing.
• • Balance short-term delivery with long-term vision. You will deprecate legacy endpoints gracefully, migrate monoliths to micro-services, and keep technical debt visible and prioritized so the platform remains nimble for years to come.
