� Description

• • Shape the future of global financial technology as a Cloud Engineer-Architect within ION’s Cloud Center of Excellence. You will sit at the intersection of software engineering, infrastructure, and strategic architecture, designing and delivering the cloud-native backbone that powers trading and workflow automation for 40+ of the world’s largest corporations, banks, and governments.
• • Own the end-to-end lifecycle of ION’s next-generation cloud platform: from white-boarding resilient, secure, and cost-efficient architectures, to writing the automation code that provisions them, to mentoring hundreds of developers on how to exploit them.
• • Drive the adoption of DevOps and SRE culture across the Group. You will evangelise loosely-coupled, heavily-monitored, failure-resistant systems, and embed these principles into every pull request, pipeline, and production deployment.
• • Create reusable Infrastructure-as-Code blueprints (Terraform, CloudFormation, Pulumi) that cut the total cost of ownership and slash time-to-market for new ION products. Your modules will be consumed by 20+ product divisions, so quality, security, and documentation are non-negotiable.
• • Architect Kubernetes-based microservice ecosystems that scale elastically from zero to millions of transactions per second while satisfying the strictest latency and compliance requirements of capital markets.
• • Design zero-trust security models, integrating IAM, secret management, policy-as-code, and continuous compliance scanning into every layer of the stack. You will work hand-in-hand with internal security experts and external auditors to keep ION at the forefront of cloud security.
• • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Argo CD, Flux) that enable product teams to ship features multiple times a day with confidence. You will refactor legacy on-prem release processes into cloud-native GitOps workflows.
• • Provide hands-on coding and scripting (Python or Go preferred) to automate everything that can be automated—provisioning, testing, compliance checks, cost optimisation, incident response, and chaos engineering.
• • Serve as a trusted consultant to C-level executives and product leadership, translating business objectives into technical roadmaps and measurable OKRs. You will present architecture decision records (ADRs) and ROI analyses to secure buy-in and budget.
• • Mentor and upskill engineers across London, Milan, Pisa, and Parma through brown-bag sessions, pair programming, and internal guilds. Your influence will raise the technical bar for the entire 5,000+ person organisation.
• • Continuously evaluate emerging cloud services, run proof-of-concepts, and feed your findings back into the Group-wide technology radar. You will decide when to adopt, when to wait, and when to build in-house.
• • Participate in an on-call rotation that practices blameless post-mortems and iterative reliability improvements. You will treat every incident as an opportunity to make the system—and the team—stronger.

� Requirements

• • Extensive, hands-on expertise with AWS and/or Azure, including production-grade design, implementation, and cost optimisation across multiple accounts or subscriptions
• • Deep mastery of Kubernetes and container ecosystems—architecture, security, networking, service mesh, GitOps, and multi-cluster governance
• • Proven ability to code or script in Python or Go to build automation, CLIs, operators, and infrastructure services
• • Solid understanding of distributed systems concepts (CAP theorem, eventual consistency, microservices trade-offs) and practical experience applying them in regulated environments
• • Demonstrable track record of influencing engineering teams and stakeholders through consulting, training, and architectural leadership
