Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Own the full software-development life-cycle for a mission-critical federal system that processes millions of transactions daily, ensuring 99.9 % uptime and strict compliance with federal security mandates.
- • Architect, code, test, and debug complex COBOL/IDMS batch and online programs, optimizing performance bottlenecks that directly affect citizen services and multi-agency data exchanges.
- • Reverse-engineer legacy modules dating back 30+ years, documenting business rules and data flows so future teams can extend functionality without introducing risk.
- • Partner with federal business analysts, security officers, and DevOps engineers to translate evolving policy changes into technical requirements, delivering releases on aggressive two-week federal sprint cycles.
- • Lead root-cause analysis for production incidents, leveraging IDMS journals, SYSUDUMP, and SMF records to restore service within SLA windows and prevent recurrence.
- • Design and execute data-migration scripts for large-scale database reorganizations, coordinating cut-over windows that minimize downtime for nationwide users.
- • Implement modern CI/CD practices within a mainframe context—integrating Changeman, Jenkins, and SonarQube—so every COBOL check-in is automatically built, unit-tested, and scanned for vulnerabilities.
- • Mentor junior developers and new graduates through pair-programming sessions and brown-bag lunches, raising the collective technical bar while preserving decades of institutional knowledge.
- • Contribute to federal audit preparations (FISMA, NIST 800-53) by ensuring code repositories, change logs, and access controls meet stringent evidentiary standards.
- • Champion continuous improvement initiatives—whether that’s rewriting monolithic batch jobs into modular services or introducing performance-test harnesses that cut overnight batch windows by 30 %.
- • Collaborate with cloud-integration teams to design API gateways that expose legacy IDMS data to modern microservices, enabling real-time analytics dashboards for agency executives.
- • Provide tier-4 production support on a rotating on-call schedule, armed with comprehensive runbooks, automated alerts, and secure VPN access to keep critical services humming 24×7.
- • Present technical briefings to federal stakeholders, translating deep-dive diagnostics into clear, risk-based recommendations that influence multi-million-dollar investment decisions.
- • Maintain meticulous documentation in Confluence and Jira, ensuring every design decision, test result, and rollback plan is discoverable for years to come.
