  • • The Coder II role is a vital position within Denver Health’s HB & PB Coding Services department, directly contributing to accurate medical coding that supports reimbursement, compliance, and quality reporting for a major safety-net health system serving over 185,000 individuals annually. This role ensures the integrity of clinical data used for financial, operational, and public health decision-making, making it essential to Denver Health’s mission of providing equitable, high-quality care.
  • • Day-to-day responsibilities include reviewing medical record documentation to abstract and assign accurate diagnoses, procedures, and modifiers using ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems; maintaining or exceeding a 95% coding accuracy rate and meeting productivity benchmarks; ensuring strict confidentiality of protected health information in compliance with HIPAA; assisting in the training and onboarding of new coders through mentorship and knowledge sharing; completing required continuing education and maintaining active coding credentials (CPC or CCS); participating in departmental coding meetings, educational roundtables, and quality improvement initiatives; developing and updating desk procedures to standardize coding practices; and utilizing coding software and reference tools (including EncoderPro and 3M CodeFinder) to resolve complex coding queries.
  • • The Coding/Compliance team at Denver Health operates as a collaborative, mission-driven unit within one of the nation’s leading academic health care systems, which includes a Level I Trauma Center, a 555-bed acute care hospital, and extensive community health networks. The team values precision, accountability, and continuous learning, and works closely with clinical, billing, and compliance partners to ensure coding integrity across inpatient, outpatient, and professional services.   • • In this role, the Coder II will deepen expertise in medical coding standards, gain experience in a high-volume, multi-specialty environment, and develop leadership potential through training and mentorship opportunities. Success in this position can lead to advancement into senior coding roles, auditing, compliance, or education-focused positions within Denver Health’s robust career pathways, supported by tuition reimbursement and professional development programs.

🎯 Requirements

  • • High School Diploma or GED required
  • • 1-3 years of experience (specifically 2 years) in medical coding involving abstraction and assignment of diagnoses, procedures, and modifiers in a multi-specialty facility; OR active specialty certification (CPC or CCS)
  • • Current certification as either CPC (Certified Professional Coder) from AAPC or CCS (Certified Coding Specialist) from AHIMA required
