Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Own the end-to-end college admissions strategy for 20–25 high-achieving high-school students who are laser-focused on majoring in Computer Science at top-50 universities (UCs, Ivies, Stanford, MIT, Carnegie Mellon, and more). You are the single point of accountability from the moment a family signs on until the final “Congratulations, you’re admitted!” email arrives.
- • Translate complex CS concepts—machine-learning pipelines, distributed systems, ethical AI, or hardware hacking—into age-appropriate language so students can articulate authentic passion in essays, interviews, and activity lists. You’ll coach them to move beyond generic buzzwords and instead tell vivid, evidence-based stories that prove both technical depth and real-world impact.
- • Architect data-driven extracurricular roadmaps that go far deeper than “join the robotics club.” Secure spots in ultra-selective summer research programs (MIT RSI, Simons, Garcia), land competitive internships at YC start-ups or university labs, win national hackathons, publish open-source libraries that earn GitHub stars, or ship an app that solves a tangible community problem. Track progress in Empowerly’s dashboard and adjust strategy every quarter.
- • Build and continuously refine a balanced college list using Empowerly’s proprietary Empowerly Score, which quantifies academic rigor, essay strength, and extracurricular depth. You’ll categorize schools as reach, target, or safety and pivot early-action vs. early-decision tactics based on real-time admissions data and yield-rate trends.
- • Provide white-glove application guidance: brainstorm essay topics that spotlight a student’s unique CS journey, conduct unlimited iterative edits, polish 150-character activity descriptions, coach recommenders on what to emphasize, and run final application audits that catch every typo, formatting glitch, or missed opportunity. You’ll also demystify FAFSA, CSS Profile, merit-scholarship essays, and wait-list letters.
- • Design and manage standardized-testing strategy—whether to sit for SAT, ACT, or go test-optional—and integrate AP Computer Science A/Principles, USACO, or other credentialing exams into a realistic timeline that doesn’t cannibalize project-building hours.
- • Serve as the trusted bridge between students and parents. Send concise weekly progress emails, host joint check-ins, and translate admissions jargon into plain English. Your tone is warm, professional, and relentlessly optimistic, keeping families confident and calm even when deadlines loom.
- • Leverage Empowerly’s internal Slack channels, resource libraries, and monthly counselor roundtables to stay ahead of shifting admissions policies, new CS program launches, and emerging scholarship opportunities. Share successful case studies and beta-test new tech features that make your workflow—and every counselor’s—more efficient.
- • Occasionally host webinars or write blog posts on topics like “How to Build a CS Spike,” “Decoding the UC PIQ Prompts,” or “What MIT Really Wants in 2025.” Your insights will shape Empowerly’s thought leadership and attract the next generation of ambitious students.
- • Work fully remote on a part-time contractor basis, setting your own schedule while committing to consistent afternoon (post-3:00 p.m. PST) or weekend availability to match student needs. Expect 5–15 hours per week per student cohort, with the flexibility to scale up during peak essay season (October–January).
- • Measure success not only by acceptance letters but by how confidently students pitch themselves in alumni interviews, network at hackathons, and thrive once they arrive on campus. Your impact echoes for years in internships, research papers, and career trajectories.
🎯 Requirements
- • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related technical field from a top-50 university; advanced degree or current enrollment in a CS graduate program is a plus
- • 2+ years of experience guiding high-school students through selective U.S. college admissions, with a proven track record of CS-major admits to at least one of: MIT, Stanford, CMU SCS, Berkeley EECS, or Ivy League programs
- • Deep familiarity with CS extracurricular pipelines—USACO, summer research programs, hackathons, open-source contributions, start-up internships—and the ability to design strategic roadmaps for 9th–12th graders
- • Exceptional writing and editing skills: able to turn rough student drafts into compelling narratives that meet Ivy League essay standards within 2–3 revision cycles
- • Remote-work discipline: comfortable managing 20–25 concurrent students via Zoom, Slack, Google Docs, and Empowerly’s internal CRM; must reliably meet deadlines and maintain detailed session notes
🏖️ Benefits
- • Fully remote, part-time contractor role with flexible hours—set your own schedule as long as you maintain post-3 p.m. PST or weekend availability for students
- • Competitive hourly rate that scales with caseload and student outcomes, plus performance bonuses for every Ivy/MIT/Stanford admit
- • Access to Empowerly’s proprietary admissions data, essay libraries, and monthly counselor roundtables that keep you ahead of policy changes
- • Opportunity to shape the next generation of CS leaders and build a long-term referral network that can lead to full-time roles or equity partnerships as Empowerly grows
