📋 Description

• As Controller at ButterflyMX Inc., you will own and guide the company’s accounting, tax, and financial reporting functions, playing a critical role in maintaining financial integrity, ensuring adherence to U.S. GAAP, and supporting the company’s strategic growth as a leader in smart access technology for multifamily and commercial properties worldwide.
• You will lead the accounting organization with a focus on operational excellence, process improvement, and team development, ensuring financial practices align with business initiatives while driving automation and system enhancements to increase efficiency and data reliability in a hybrid, AI-forward environment.
• The Controller role is based at ButterflyMX’s NYC Headquarters in a flexible hybrid model, reporting to finance leadership and collaborating closely with cross-functional teams to support the company’s mission of empowering people to manage doors and gates via smartphone across 20,000+ properties globally.
• Your day-to-day responsibilities will include directing all accounting, tax, and financial reporting activities to ensure precision, consistency, and regulatory compliance; authoring and maintaining technical accounting documentation, internal policies, and procedural guides; managing month-end and year-end close processes, including consolidations and financial statement preparation; coordinating and supporting external audits while upholding a strong internal control framework; overseeing required tax filings and managing transfer pricing structures for compliance and tax efficiency.
• You will regularly review existing processes to introduce improvements that strengthen accuracy, scalability, and efficiency; lead, coach, and develop the accounting team to promote accountability, growth, and continuous improvement; collaborate with cross-functional partners to ensure financial practices support business objectives; and drive automation and system enhancements—including leveraging AI tools—to reduce manual effort and improve data reliability across the finance function.

🎯 Requirements

• 10+ years of progressive experience in accounting or finance, with SaaS environment experience considered a plus
• Prior experience at a Big 4 accounting firm is strongly preferred
• Demonstrated expertise in consolidations and hands-on management of transfer pricing arrangements
• CPA certification is highly valued
• Experience overseeing or partnering closely on payroll operations is a plus
• Proven track record of implementing automated solutions to improve team productivity and reduce risk
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a reputation for responsiveness and reliability
• Strong project management skills with the ability to influence across functions and execute complex initiatives
• Experience working with Sage Intacct is preferred
• Comfortable leading distributed teams across multiple time zones and flexing work hours as business needs require
• Proven experience leveraging AI tools in both professional and personal settings, as ButterflyMX is an AI-forward organization where AI optimization is crucial in every role
