  • • As Counsel, Data Privacy at Airwallex, you will serve as a key legal advisor on data protection, AI governance, and privacy compliance across the US and broader Americas, enabling the company to innovate safely within complex regulatory landscapes.
  • • You will provide risk-based, business-oriented legal advice on US, Canadian, and South American data protection laws, AI frameworks, and cybersecurity issues, including cross-border data access and national security-adjacent matters.
  • • You will partner with Product, Engineering, Information Security, and other business units to embed privacy- and security-by-design principles into product development, technical architecture, and go-to-market strategies.
  • • You will lead the development and implementation of AI governance programs, draft and negotiate data-sharing agreements, oversee international data transfers, and support incident response for privacy and security events.
  • • You will advise on high-risk processing activities such as novel AI use cases and embedded finance data models, ensuring appropriate safeguards and documentation are in place.
  • • You will engage with regulators and policymakers on privacy, cybersecurity, and data access issues, and help build scalable compliance tools, training programs, and workflows for global teams.
  • • You will operate in a fast-paced, high-growth fintech environment, working with globally distributed teams across time zones to drive impact and ownership.
  • • You will join a collaborative Legal, Risk & Compliance team dedicated to safeguarding Airwallex’s operations through ethical conduct, proactive risk management, and expert guidance across all business functions.
  • • You will have the opportunity to grow your expertise in global privacy law, AI governance, and financial services regulation while contributing to the development of a leading global payments platform.

🎯 Requirements

  • • U.S. legal qualification (or foreign equivalent) and active license to practice in at least one US jurisdiction.
  • • 5 years of experience in an in-house legal department and/or private practice advising on technology, data, and privacy issues related to technical platforms and products.
  • • Strong knowledge of US federal and state privacy and data-security laws (such as CCPA/CPRA and GLBA/Reg P) and how they intersect with payments and broader financial-services regulation, plus working knowledge of GDPR and Canadian/South American privacy requirements (such as LGPD).
  • • Demonstrated experience partnering with technical teams (Product, Engineering, Information Security) to translate legal and regulatory requirements into practical technical designs, controls, and processes.
  • • Demonstrated experience advising on emerging US and global AI legal requirements and AI-governance best practices, and experience advising on AI/ML tools, vendors, or products from a privacy and data-protection perspective.
  • • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex legal concepts to non-lawyers and senior executives, and to drive clear decisions in ambiguous, time-sensitive situations.
