📋 Description

• Architect and own the end-to-end data stack—from ingestion to modeling to visualization—ensuring that every team at Thatch can answer critical questions in minutes, not days. You will design scalable pipelines that pull from production databases, third-party APIs, and event streams, transforming raw data into analytics-ready assets.
• Build and maintain robust ETL/ELT workflows using modern orchestration tools (Airflow, dbt, Prefect, or similar) that guarantee data freshness, lineage, and quality. You’ll set SLAs for latency and accuracy, monitor for anomalies, and institute automated testing so stakeholders trust every number they see.
• Model the core entities that drive our business—customers, subscriptions, claims, payments, and partners—into a clean, versioned, and well-documented warehouse schema. Your dimensional models will become the single source of truth powering executive dashboards, growth experiments, and machine-learning features.
• Partner directly with Product, Growth, Finance, and Customer Success to translate ambiguous business questions into precise data requirements. You’ll sit in on sprint planning, sketch schema designs on whiteboards, and iterate quickly so insights keep pace with product releases.
• Create intuitive Looker/Sigma/Tableau dashboards that surface KPIs for leadership and self-serve metrics for individual contributors. You’ll teach non-technical teammates how to drill, filter, and explore data confidently, turning curiosity into faster decisions.
• Establish data governance and security best practices from day one—defining roles, masking PII, and ensuring HIPAA and SOC-2 compliance—so our infrastructure scales without surprises.
• Prototype predictive models that anticipate churn, lifetime value, and claims risk, collaborating with Data Science to move experiments from Jupyter notebooks to production-grade features served in real time.
• Instrument event tracking across web, mobile, and backend services, ensuring consistent naming conventions, versioning, and documentation so analysts never waste time hunting for the right event.
• Optimize warehouse costs and query performance through partitioning, incremental loads, and materialized views, balancing speed with budget discipline as data volume 10× over the next 24 months.
• Mentor junior engineers and analysts through code reviews, lunch-and-learns, and pair programming, cultivating a culture where data excellence is everyone’s responsibility.
• Champion an experimentation framework that powers A/B tests, feature flags, and holdout studies, enabling Product to ship with statistical rigor and measurable impact.
• Contribute to open-source projects and the broader data community, sharing Thatch’s learnings on streaming ingestion, privacy-preserving analytics, and low-latency OLAP.
• Own the data roadmap: prioritize initiatives, estimate effort, and communicate trade-offs to leadership so engineering resources align with the highest-impact opportunities.
• Continuously evaluate new technologies—Snowflake, BigQuery, DuckDB, dbt Core vs Cloud, streaming platforms like Kafka or Redpanda—and make build-vs-buy decisions that future-proof our architecture.

🎯 Requirements

• 4+ years of hands-on experience designing, building, and operating cloud data warehouses (Snowflake, BigQuery, or Redshift) in production environments serving >1 TB of data.
• Expert-level SQL and Python; ability to write performant, maintainable transformations and orchestrate them with dbt or similar frameworks.
• Proven track record modeling complex, rapidly changing business domains into clean, scalable dimensional schemas (star/snowflake, slowly changing dimensions, etc.).
• Experience with workflow orchestration tools (Airflow, Prefect, Dagster) and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, Pulumi) to deploy and monitor pipelines.
• Nice-to-have: familiarity with streaming data (Kafka, Kinesis, Pub/Sub) and real-time analytics engines (ClickHouse, Druid, Pinot).
