- • As a Data Reliability Engineer at Groupon, you will be instrumental in ensuring the integrity and performance of the company's critical data pipelines. This role is pivotal in maintaining the operational excellence of systems that power financial reporting, revenue management, HR, marketing, and finance, ensuring they consistently meet defined service levels. You will be part of a dynamic, software-first reliability engineering function that manages hundreds of complex data pipelines across various business verticals, contributing directly to Groupon's radical transformation journey and its commitment to delivering results.
- • In this role, you will be responsible for owning on-call rotations, meticulously triaging and investigating pipeline failures across diverse platforms such as Google Cloud Composer (Airflow), Keboola, N8N, and third-party vendor jobs. Your accountability will extend to performing deep root cause analysis to identify and implement permanent fixes, thereby enhancing system stability and preventing recurrence of issues. You will also be tasked with maintaining Service Level Objectives (SLOs) and Service Level Agreements (SLAs) compliance for Tier 1 and Tier 2 data assets, authoring comprehensive blameless postmortems, developing incident runbooks, and creating detailed handover documentation to facilitate smooth transitions and knowledge sharing within the team.
- • A significant aspect of your day-to-day will involve building automation tools and taking ownership of internal products, such as the Claude/Google ADK Agent and Prometheus query-exporter, functioning as a software engineer. You will integrate automated data quality checks, including schema validation, null-count analysis, and freshness monitoring, directly into Github Actions CI/CD pipelines, ensuring data accuracy and reliability from the source. Furthermore, you will manage and optimize ETL/ELT workflows using SQL and Python across various data streams, including revenue, pricing, promotions, event datastreams, and the customer data platform, while actively contributing to the development of self-healing mechanisms through automated retries and dynamic scaling.
- • You will also play a key role in managing the data platform and infrastructure. This includes provisioning, configuring, and upgrading Google Cloud Composer environments across development, staging, and production instances. You will be responsible for managing CI/CD governance, handling secrets, controlling access permissions, and maintaining the cloud security posture for all production infrastructure. Additionally, you will conduct thorough capacity planning reviews for the data warehouse, forecasting future scaling needs based on current utilization trends to ensure optimal performance and resource allocation.
- • Your responsibilities will extend to enhancing observability and fostering strong stakeholder collaboration. You will instrument SLO boards in JSM to effectively reduce paging fatigue and drive cost-tuning and performance initiatives across the data ecosystem. You will actively support the Data Unification initiative and contribute to broader data architecture goals, ensuring alignment and coherence across the organization's data landscape. Crucially, you will serve as the primary communication bridge between technical teams and business stakeholders in Sales, Marketing, Finance, and Revenue, translating technical issues into business impact and vice versa. You will partner with these stakeholders on pipeline design reviews and contribute to quarterly Reliability Reviews, ensuring data solutions meet business needs and expectations.
- • This role offers a unique opportunity to gain deep experience at the intersection of Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) and data engineering, a rare specialization in the industry. You will have the autonomy to build innovative AI-powered agents, internal tools, and automation systems that will directly shape company-wide operations and improve efficiency. The work is high-stakes and high-impact, as the quality and reliability of data directly influence critical company-wide financial and operational decisions. You will collaborate with a globally distributed, highly skilled team across the US, Brazil, India, and Europe, leveraging best-in-class tooling and benefiting from diverse professional backgrounds and perspectives. This is an environment where engineers who take ownership, value automation, communicate clearly, and are curious and practical thrive, making a tangible impact on a leading local e-commerce marketplace.
🎯 Requirements
- • Minimum 3 years (3.5-4 preferred) of production system experience with business-critical accountability.
- • Proficiency in scripting with Python and Linux environments, with a practical approach to using AI-generated code.
- • Expert-level SQL skills, including complex queries, large-table transactions (50M+ rows), execution plan analysis, and lock prevention.
- • Fluency in Git, including branching, stashing, cherry-picking, and hotfix workflows.
- • Demonstrated autonomy in root cause analysis across multiple systems and layers.
- • Hands-on experience with cloud platforms, specifically Google Cloud Composer/Airflow and GCP, including DAG management and debugging.
- • A strong CI/CD and automation mindset, with experience building automation tools and maintaining CI/CD workflows.
🏖️ Benefits
- • Opportunity to work in a rare specialization at the intersection of SRE and data engineering.
- • Freedom to build AI-powered agents, internal tools, and automation systems.
- • High-stakes, high-impact work directly influencing company-wide financial and operational decisions.
- • Collaboration with a globally distributed, highly skilled team across the US, Brazil, India, and Europe.
- • Access to best-in-class tooling and diverse backgrounds.
