Full Job Description

📋 Description

  • Join Sportygroup B.V., a leading company in the industry, as a pivotal Database Reliability Engineer (DBRE) and play a crucial role in maintaining and evolving our cutting-edge database infrastructure. With tens of millions of visitors weekly, our platform demands robust, scalable, and highly available data solutions, and you will be at the forefront of ensuring this reliability.
  • This role offers a unique opportunity to take full ownership of our existing and future database infrastructure, supporting multiple platforms and facilitating expansion into new global regions. You will be working with modern technologies, as our systems were built from scratch approximately four years ago, ensuring you won't be bogged down by legacy systems. Furthermore, you will have the autonomy to research, propose, and implement new technologies that align with the team's vision and the company's strategic goals.
  • Our technology stack is comprehensive and modern, featuring AWS Aurora MySQL/PostgreSQL and MongoDB Atlas for relational and NoSQL databases, respectively. We leverage AWS ElastiCache and Valkey for our caching layer, and Apache RocketMQ and RabbitMQ for message queuing. For search capabilities, we utilize ElasticSearch and Mongo Atlas, complemented by Redshift for OLAP. Monitoring and alerting are handled by Prometheus, Grafana, Loki, and Alert Manager, with robust backup and recovery solutions including AWS Backup, Point-in-Time Recovery, and Cross-Region Replication. We also employ RDS Proxy for database proxying, Terraform and Ansible for Infrastructure as Code, and Jenkins, ArgoCD, Github Actions, and Helm for CI/CD integration. Network and security are managed through AWS VPC, Security Groups, and AWS Secrets Manager, with Golang and Python as our primary programming languages for automation, and Kubernetes for containerization.
  • As a DBRE, your responsibilities will encompass working collaboratively within a team of DBRE and DevOps professionals. You will be instrumental in designing, implementing, and maintaining highly available database architectures that can scale to support significant business growth across numerous countries.
  • A key aspect of your role will be to continuously improve our existing database infrastructure. This includes in-depth performance tuning, strategic capacity planning, refining backup and recovery procedures, and developing comprehensive disaster recovery plans to ensure business continuity.
  • You will be a driving force in automation, developing internal tools and platforms using Go and Python. These tools will be designed to streamline database operations, minimize manual interventions, and significantly reduce the likelihood of human error, thereby enhancing overall system reliability.
  • Proactive monitoring of database health and performance metrics is essential. You will establish sophisticated alerting mechanisms, potentially based on SLO burn rates, to identify and address potential issues before they impact users.
  • You will assume full ownership and responsibility for critical database operations, including managing schema changes, executing complex data migrations, and overseeing production deployments with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Collaboration is key; you will work closely with development teams, providing expert consultation on database design, optimizing query performance, and offering timely troubleshooting support to ensure seamless application functionality.
  • Conducting regular database security audits and implementing industry-leading security best practices will be paramount to safeguarding our sensitive data and maintaining user trust.
  • This role is ideal for a self-driven individual passionate about building and maintaining highly reliable, scalable data infrastructure in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. You will be empowered to make a tangible impact on a platform used by millions.
