📋 Description
- • The Deputy General Counsel at American AgCredit plays a pivotal role in supporting the organization’s mission to serve agricultural communities by providing expert legal leadership that enables sound business decisions, risk mitigation, and strategic growth. This role is essential for ensuring legal compliance, protecting organizational interests, and advising leadership on complex matters that impact the Association’s operations, reputation, and long-term sustainability.
- • Day-to-day responsibilities include assisting in the leadership and oversight of the Legal Department, mentoring and developing legal staff, and providing strategic legal guidance across departments on contracts, compliance, employment law, litigation, and risk management. The role involves reviewing and negotiating technology-focused agreements (SaaS, DaaS), managing outside counsel, supporting HR and privacy initiatives, advising on employee relations and talent matters, and serving as a key liaison to the Board of Directors on legal and regulatory issues.
- • The Deputy General Counsel works closely with the Executive Team, Board of Directors, and employees at all levels, collaborating with cross-functional partners in Human Resources, Privacy and Data Security, Vendor Risk, Facilities, and Business Technology to embed legal thought partnership into business strategy and operations.
- • This role offers the opportunity to shape legal strategy and influence organizational direction in a mission-driven financial cooperative dedicated to agriculture. The successful candidate will develop deep expertise in financial services law, employment law, and regulatory compliance while building leadership experience in a high-impact, collaborative environment that values innovation, integrity, and service to rural communities.
🎯 Requirements
- • Juris Doctorate (JD) from an accredited law school and active membership in good standing with at least one state bar association.
- • Minimum of ten years of progressively responsible legal experience, with substantial focus on finance, corporate law, and human resources/employment law.
- • Proven ability to provide strategic legal advice, manage complex litigation and outside counsel, draft and negotiate sophisticated contracts (including technology agreements), and advise on compliance, risk management, and organizational policies.
