- • As a Detection Engineer at Nelnet, you will play a critical role in safeguarding the organization’s digital infrastructure by monitoring, analyzing, and responding to security threats across hybrid on-premise and cloud environments. Your work directly supports Nelnet’s mission of creating opportunities for people where they live, learn, and work by ensuring the integrity and availability of systems that serve students, educators, and financial customers.
- • Day to day, you will monitor and analyze logs in SIEM tools and log aggregators like Google Observability, verify threat findings to distinguish real threats from false positives, build and maintain cloud infrastructure on AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud, set up logging sources and data transformations in Cribl, participate in change control and IT governance processes, respond to audit findings, and maintain documentation for security-related systems while staying current on global threat intelligence.
- • You will join Nelnet’s Cybersecurity Log Operations Engineers team, a shared service supporting multiple business lines with a hybridized attack surface. Nelnet is a diversified organization with over 6,500 associates, operating as a student loan servicer, fiber internet pioneer, real estate investor, and software provider, united by a mission-driven culture focused on service, innovation, and community impact.
- • In this role, you will deepen your expertise in cloud security, log management, threat detection, and enterprise security tooling while contributing to compliance with U.S. Department of Education contracts. You’ll gain hands-on experience with Cribl, SIEM platforms (Splunk, Google SecOps, Google Cloud Observability), scripting languages (PowerShell, Python, BASH), and IT service management tools like ServiceNow and Jira, positioning you for advancement in cybersecurity operations and engineering.
🎯 Requirements
- • Bachelor’s degree in cybersecurity, computer science, systems administration, information systems, or related field (or equivalent work experience and certifications)
- • Minimum four years of experience implementing and supporting cybersecurity technologies including SIEM, SOAR, database monitoring, threat detection mechanisms, alarming systems, and operational logging/alerting for business applications
- • Ability to work effectively with remote teams using collaboration tools such as Microsoft Teams, email, and video conferencing
