Full Job Description
š Description
- ⢠Architect and enforce cohesive development standards across the data science team, ensuring every model is built on a consistent, reusable foundation from exploratory analysis through deployment and monitoring.
- ⢠Lead by example as a code-first practitioner, building modular, well-documented Python frameworks and tools that enable the team to extend prior work without reinventing solutions.
- ⢠Drive model development with a "fit-for-deployment" mindset from day one, collaborating closely with Data Engineering, Analytics Engineering, MLOps, IT, and business stakeholders to ensure solutions integrate into front-end systems used by underwriters, claims handlers, and risk managers.
- ⢠Serve as a principal participant in the cross-functional tech lead forum, rapidly estimating effort, shaping high-level designs, and contributing to a rigorous yet lightweight prioritization and roadmap process to ensure clarity on what ideas are in flight, should be worked on, or can be pursued.
- ⢠Establish clear success criteria, measurement frameworks, and monitoring standards for every deployed model, including technical metrics (drift, accuracy, bias) and business outcomes (KPI achievement, adoption).
- ⢠Champion documentation-as-a-habit, embedding disciplined documentation practices across the team rather than treating documentation as an afterthought.
- ⢠Mentor and elevate junior data scientists by raising the bar on engineering standards, communication habits, and professional maturity through framework-building and示č leadership.
- ⢠Collaborate deeply with Analytics Engineering to prototype Gold Layer data assets for new models, ensuring no model reaches production without access to high-quality, governed data.
- ⢠Manage competing priorities with clarity and transparency, ensuring the team never works quietly on low-value tasks and consistently surfaces tradeoffs early to align on highest-impact work.
- ⢠Build and enforce engineering discipline across the data science practice, transforming it from isolated model development into a production-grade engineering function that influences decisions across Claims, Underwriting, Risk Management, and Distribution.
- ⢠Maintain intellectual honesty in model evaluation, refusing to skip steps, paper over data gaps, or declare success before business users are actively using the output.
- ⢠Work within a modern data stack including AWS, Databricks, dbt, GitHub, Hex, and Arize, while also developing in-house Python software when it creates a competitive advantage.
- ⢠Operate within a centralized Data & AI department (IDEAS) that unites specialists across data architecture, engineering, analytics, governance, and advanced modeling to drive impact across the entire insurance ecosystem.
- ⢠Embrace a culture of curiosity, craftsmanship, growth, mentorship, transparency, and ownership, with a focus on building durable systems through disciplined experimentation and continuous learning.
šÆ Requirements
- ⢠8+ years of experience in applied, code-first data science and analytics within insurance or a closely adjacent industry (financial services, risk, or similar)
- ⢠Demonstrated success building and enforcing reusable ML frameworks and engineering standards across a team, including Python modules, shared pipelines, and consistent documentation patterns
- ⢠Hands-on expertise in the full model lifecycle: from problem framing and data exploration through feature engineering, training, validation, deployment into production systems, and continuous monitoring
- ⢠A collaborative instinct to work effectively across Data Engineering, Analytics Engineering, MLOps, IT, and business partners to design feasible, integrated, and lasting solutions
- ⢠Experience in or strong appetite for structured cross-functional work, including tech lead forums, lightweight CBAs, roadmap estimation, and prioritization rigor
- ⢠Strong mentorship instincts with a track record of raising the technical bar of colleagues by making the right way the easy way through frameworks and systems
šļø Benefits
- ⢠Base salary range of $155,000 to $185,000 based on full-time schedule, with compensation adjusted for skills, experience, location, market data, and internal equity
- ⢠Opportunities for professional and personal development through on-the-job learning and structured growth experiences
- ⢠Clarity and kindness in communication, with transparent expectations around success
- ⢠Supportive culture that shows up consistently in good times and bad, fostering psychological safety and mutual care
- ⢠Community-oriented environment where individuals are lifted up, wins are celebrated, and challenges are supported collectively
