- • Lead end-to-end technical delivery for BetterUp’s largest and most strategic enterprise accounts, from scoping with executive stakeholders through prototype development, production rollout, and handoff to core platform teams.
- • Serve as the critical bridge between field teams and platform engineering, translating real-world customer needs into durable platform capabilities and feeding actionable customer signal back into product roadmaps.
- • Build, hire, develop, and retain a high-trust team of Forward Deployed Engineers who excel in ambiguous, customer-facing environments with high stakes and tight timelines.
- • Set and uphold the standard for technical rigor, customer judgment, and enterprise-readiness across all FDE engagements, ensuring security, data governance, and compliance are never compromised.
- • Operate as a trusted technical executive in customer meetings, earning credibility with both engineering teams and C-suite stakeholders during working sessions, escalations, and strategic discussions.
- • Partner cross-functionally with product, sales engineering, security, and platform leadership to unblock enterprise deals, de-risk delivery commitments, and align technical execution with business outcomes.
- • Ship prototypes and integrations on aggressive timelines while maintaining enterprise-grade standards for scalability, identity management, provisioning, and data security.
- • Shape and implement AI-forward engineering strategies that align with business objectives, embedding experimentation and AI-augmented workflows into daily FDE operations.
- • Collaborate with IT, Legal, and Security teams to establish governance frameworks that enable responsible, scalable use of AI in enterprise contexts.
- • Influence peer directors to adopt AI practices that enhance cross-functional collaboration and improve customer outcomes across the organization.
- • Demonstrate fluency in AI-native engineering workflows, including tools such as LLM-powered data documentation, AI-assisted SQL generation, and automated anomaly detection, and share discoveries openly to elevate team capabilities.
- • Maintain a hybrid work model requiring in-person collaboration at one of BetterUp’s U.S. office hubs (Austin, TX; New York City, NY; San Francisco, CA; or Washington, DC metro area) for at least two days per week (eight days per month).
- • Champion a culture of continuous learning, personal development, and human-centered engineering, aligning with BetterUp’s mission of human transformation.
🎯 Requirements
- • 12+ years in software engineering, with 4+ years leading engineering teams (manager-of-managers or strong senior-IC-to-lead trajectory)
- • Track record delivering complex software in customer-facing or forward-deployed settings (e.g., FDE, solutions engineering, or professional services with engineering depth)
- • Strong hands-on technical foundation in UI, distributed systems, APIs and integrations, identity and provisioning, and other enterprise requirements; experience with AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud is a strong plus
- • Demonstrated ability to operate amid ambiguity, turning vague executive-level requests into working software on tight timelines
- • Excellent stakeholder skills with credibility among both customer engineers and senior business leaders
- • Sound judgment on enterprise concerns including security, data governance, compliance, and scalability
