Full Job Description
📋 Description
- • As the Director, Inpatient Coding and Compliance at The Ohio State University, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the integrity and accuracy of medical information management services. This leadership position is crucial for maintaining high-quality data collection and reporting systems, which are fundamental to patient care, teaching, research, hospital operations, quality assurance, and the financial viability of a leading healthcare organization. Your expertise will directly impact the health system's ability to function effectively and compliantly.
- • In this dynamic role, your day-to-day responsibilities will encompass a broad spectrum of critical functions. You will provide administrative direction to the coding services program, ensuring the high-quality, timely coding of diagnoses and procedures for both inpatient and outpatient accounts. This involves meticulous application of coding classification systems such as ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM/PCS, and CPT-4 to meet the stringent requirements of the hospital's billing system. Furthermore, you will manage the abstracting of essential data elements required for billing, including admission type and source, discharge disposition, and attending physician information. A significant part of your role will involve the ongoing review and monitoring of coding accuracy, which is paramount to the Medical Center’s Integrity Program and ensures accurate reimbursement. You will also provide administrative direction to the compliance program within Medical Information Management, with a sharp focus on patient confidentiality and the accurate abstracting of data elements for billing. This includes ensuring adherence to CMS regulations regarding coding and data abstraction to mitigate the organization's financial risk associated with non-compliance. You will collaborate closely with the Coding Data Analyst to benchmark program results against peer organizations, driving continuous improvement in quality and timeliness. A key responsibility will be providing comprehensive education on coding, compliance, and documentation requirements, including directing the department’s coding continuing education program for coding, documentation enhancement, and data quality management staff. You will maintain the department's compliance plan and diligently monitor performance against it. Additionally, you will support administrative and research needs by retrieving abstracted and other patient or physician-specific information from the abstracting system, data marts, and information warehouse in response to authorized requests. Your role will involve fostering strong organizational relationships with Case Management, Access and Revenue Management, Business Planning, and the Information Warehouse, advising these departments on issues related to coding and documentation as they pertain to utilization management, financial performance, strategic planning, and administrative information needs.
- • You will be an integral part of the Health System Shared Services | Financial Administration department, contributing to the overall success of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. This includes providing leadership and direction for Medical Information Management areas and staff, particularly in the absence of the Administrative Director. You will advise administration, medical staff, and managerial staff on specific issues and problems related to coding, documentation, and compliance, and will be instrumental in resolving intra-departmental and inter-departmental challenges. Your leadership will extend across multiple key facilities within the health system, including University Hospital (and its associated facilities like Ross Heart Hospital, Dodd Hall, McCampbell Hall, Morehouse Medical Plaza, and the Eye and Ear Institute), The James (inpatient, OBS, SDS), OSU Harding, and University Hospital East.
- • In this role, you will have the opportunity to significantly enhance your leadership capabilities in a complex healthcare environment. You can deepen your understanding of healthcare finance, regulatory compliance, and data management within a top-tier academic medical center. By analyzing performance data and implementing strategic improvements, you will directly contribute to the financial health and operational efficiency of the organization. You will also gain invaluable experience in managing diverse teams and fostering a culture of continuous learning and compliance, preparing you for even greater leadership challenges within the healthcare industry. Your work will be instrumental in shaping best practices for medical information management and ensuring the highest standards of coding and compliance are met across the health system.
