- • Provide strategic, technical, and scientific leadership for The Nature Conservancy’s California Water Program to advance surface water and groundwater conservation initiatives.
- • Lead and manage a multidisciplinary team of scientists, including performance management, professional development, and mentoring.
- • Develop innovative scientific ideas and products leveraging TNC California’s network of land and water holdings to drive conservation outcomes.
- • Collaborate internally and externally with scientists, policymakers, NGOs, government agencies, and academic institutions to align science with conservation strategies.
- • Build and maintain a robust network of external scientific collaborators across academia, government, for-profit, and non-profit sectors.
- • Design and implement field surveys, experiments, and ecological assessments to generate actionable conservation science.
- • Draft scientific publications, project reports, and science products; oversee development of deliverables by direct reports.
- • Lead the development and management of grants, contracts, and funding proposals to support program objectives and secure financial resources.
- • Co-develop and manage program budgets, track expenditures, and ensure fiscal accountability across science initiatives.
- • Synthesize research findings and lessons learned into strategic conservation frameworks and adaptive management systems.
- • Represent TNC as a freshwater science expert to diverse audiences including senior leaders, donors, board members, elected officials, media, and community groups.
- • Communicate conservation science effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders through verbal and written presentations.
- • Work across geographic and ecosystem boundaries in California and collaborate with regional and global science communities to enhance conservation practices.
- • Support systematic conservation planning, monitoring, and evaluation to measure impact and guide program refinement.
- • Lead and participate in coalitions that deliver multi-benefit conservation outcomes.
- • Travel up to 50% of the time, including to remote locations, hazardous terrain, and variable weather conditions across the U.S. and internationally.
- • Ensure compliance with TNC’s Auto Safety Program, including maintaining a valid driver’s license and passing a motor vehicle record review.
🎯 Requirements
- • Ph.D. in a science-related field and 8 years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- • Supervisory experience including motivating, coaching, setting objectives, and managing performance of science staff
- • Proven record of conducting original research and publishing in peer-reviewed scientific journals
- • Experience fundraising and writing grants or research proposals
- • Experience designing, organizing, and directing multiple complex, strategically important projects and leading multidisciplinary teams
- • Experience working on socio-ecological, political, and freshwater conservation issues specifically in California
