  • • Lead the charge in establishing and refining Nelnet Business Services' (NBS) innovative venture creation engine, known as the Venture Factory. This pivotal role involves the end-to-end design, meticulous operation, and continuous enhancement of a systematic process dedicated to identifying, rigorously assessing, creatively prototyping, and diligently piloting new business opportunities.
  • • Your primary mission will be to ensure the consistent delivery of validated business potential on an annual basis, fostering a dynamic start-up mentality characterized by a 'fail fast, learn quickly' ethos. This approach is crucial for minimizing expenditure and significantly accelerating the time-to-market for promising new ventures.
  • • This is a hands-on leadership position, where you will personally own the entire upstream venture lifecycle, from initial ideation through to the critical validation stages. Your expertise will be instrumental in ensuring that only the most robust and promising ideas are advanced for scaling, thereby directly supporting Nelnet's strategic commitment to achieving sustainable growth in new markets.
  • • Develop and implement a robust, repeatable system for sourcing high-quality venture candidates. This will involve actively engaging with diverse market landscapes, the vibrant startup ecosystem, direct customer feedback, and leveraging internal organizational resources to uncover and synthesize compelling venture hypotheses.
  • • Establish and meticulously maintain formal, objective criteria for opportunity qualification. These criteria will encompass a thorough evaluation of strategic alignment with Nelnet's overarching goals, the uniqueness and defensibility of the proposed differentiation, and a comprehensive risk-to-return-on-investment profile.
  • • Construct and actively manage a prioritized venture backlog. This backlog will feature clearly defined hypotheses, explicit 'kill criteria' for premature termination, and strict investment caps to ensure financial discipline.
  • • Spearhead the launch of prototypes and pilots, meticulously designed to generate validated business potential. You will enforce stringent time-boxing and unwavering capital discipline throughout these phases.
  • • Actively participate in the hands-on execution of venture builds, directly engaging in customer onboarding processes and critical validation discussions to ensure practical, real-world learning and adaptation.
  • • Apply sophisticated risk-adjusted investment logic to all venture initiatives. Conduct rigorous weekly venture reviews, providing clear, data-driven recommendations for continuation, strategic pivots, or outright termination based on performance and potential.
  • • Own the critical 'promotion readiness' phase, ensuring a seamless and well-defined handoff to relevant business units. This includes providing absolute clarity on the validated use cases, precise customer targets, and the essential scale requirements for successful integration.
  • • Diligently track and report on key success metrics, focusing on the generation of validated business potential, the successful deployment of pilots, and the overall 'time-to-signal' – the speed at which critical learning is achieved.
  • • Proactively prevent the perpetuation of 'zombie initiatives' and resist premature scaling pressures through disciplined, objective decision-making rooted in validated data and strategic alignment.
  • • Drive a culture of innovation and disciplined experimentation within NBS, empowering teams to explore new frontiers while maintaining a sharp focus on measurable outcomes and strategic impact.
  • • Collaborate closely with internal stakeholders, including product, engineering, marketing, and sales teams, to ensure alignment and facilitate the successful transition of validated ventures into scalable business units.
  • • Stay abreast of emerging market trends, technological advancements, and competitive landscapes to continuously inform the venture sourcing and assessment process.
  • • Foster strong relationships within the external startup and venture capital communities to identify potential partnerships, acquisition targets, and best practices in venture creation.
  • • Champion the 'fail fast, learn quickly' methodology, creating a safe environment for experimentation and ensuring that lessons learned from unsuccessful ventures are captured and disseminated effectively across the organization.
