Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Architect and continuously refine the data backbone that powers Bonterra’s EveryAction and NGP VAN analytics ecosystem, ensuring campaigns, unions, and progressive organizations can turn raw data into decisive action.
- • Own the full lifecycle of enterprise-scale databases—designing schemas, tuning performance, and enforcing security—so that millions of supporter records, donation histories, and volunteer activities are always accurate, available, and lightning-fast.
- • Build and maintain automated ETL/ELT pipelines that ingest data from dozens of sources (CRM exports, voter files, digital ad platforms, union membership systems) into cloud and on-premise warehouses, enabling real-time dashboards and AI-driven insights.
- • Optimize query performance through advanced indexing, partitioning, and materialized views, cutting report-generation time from hours to minutes so field teams can pivot strategy the same day.
- • Implement bullet-proof backup, disaster-recovery, and high-availability strategies that exceed SOC 2 and campaign-finance compliance standards, guaranteeing zero data loss during critical election windows.
- • Collaborate daily with analytics engineers, data scientists, and product managers to translate campaign priorities into scalable data models—whether it’s modeling multi-channel attribution for a presidential race or tracking bargaining-unit membership growth for a national union.
- • Monitor database health 24/7 via automated alerting and custom dashboards; perform root-cause analysis on latency spikes or replication lag and roll out fixes without downtime.
- • Champion data governance by enforcing role-based access controls, field-level encryption, and comprehensive audit logs—protecting sensitive voter and donor information at every step.
- • Document every schema change, configuration tweak, and operational runbook in Git-based wikis so institutional knowledge survives staff turnover and rapid campaign cycles.
- • Participate in sprint planning and release management, ensuring database migrations are tested, peer-reviewed, and deployed seamlessly across staging, QA, and production environments.
- • Forecast capacity needs based on product roadmaps—anticipating a 3× data surge during presidential years—and proactively scale storage, compute, and licensing to stay ahead of demand.
- • Contribute to open-source or internal tooling that simplifies database provisioning, schema versioning, and automated testing—multiplying the team’s impact across Bonterra’s portfolio.
- • Spend 40 %+ of your time supporting union and labor clients, understanding their unique data structures (dues processing, grievance tracking, organizing metrics) and tailoring solutions that empower workers and advance collective bargaining goals.
- • Mentor junior engineers through pair programming and design reviews, raising the bar for code quality, security hygiene, and progressive data best practices across the organization.
- • Translate complex technical trade-offs into plain language for campaign managers and union leadership, ensuring stakeholders understand how architectural decisions affect field outcomes and compliance deadlines.
🎯 Requirements
- • Proficiency in SQL and at least one major RDBMS (PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server, Oracle) plus hands-on experience with a cloud data warehouse (BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift, or Azure Synapse).
- • Demonstrated success designing relational schemas, optimizing queries, and implementing ETL/ELT pipelines in analytics or software-engineering environments.
- • Scripting chops in Python or Bash for automation, monitoring, and orchestration (dbt, Airflow, or similar tools a plus).
- • Deep understanding of backup, restore, replication, and high-availability strategies; familiarity with SOC 2, GDPR, or campaign-finance security requirements.
- • 1–3 years of experience managing production databases; exposure to union, political, or public-sector data systems strongly preferred.
- • Bachelor’s degree in CS, Data Engineering, or equivalent practical experience; eligibility to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.
🏖️ Benefits
- • Remote-first culture with flexible hours, annual home-office stipend, and co-working reimbursements so you can work where you’re most effective.
- • Comprehensive medical, dental, vision, and mental-health coverage starting day one, plus employer-funded HSA and dependent-care FSA.
- • 401(k) with 4 % company match, immediate vesting, and optional after-tax Roth conversions to build long-term wealth.
- • 20 days PTO, 11 federal holidays, and a week-long winter shutdown—because campaigns rest, too—plus paid volunteer time for causes you care about.
- • Annual professional-development budget ($2,000+) and paid attendance at conferences like PyCon, AWS re:Invent, or Data Council to keep skills sharp.
