Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Own the end-to-end firmware architecture for Cents’ fleet of hundreds of thousands of payment and IoT sensor devices deployed across thousands of laundromat and dry-cleaning locations in the US and Canada. You will be the technical authority who defines how our embedded systems evolve to keep pace with a 40-billion-dollar industry that is rapidly digitizing.
- • Architect, implement, and maintain robust firmware that bridges coin-op machines, card readers, mobile wallets, and cloud analytics. Your code will directly influence how operators collect revenue, monitor machine health, and delight customers in real time.
- • Lead design discussions that translate complex technical trade-offs into clear narratives for product managers, operators, and non-technical stakeholders. You will regularly present architectural options, risk assessments, and ROI projections that shape the product roadmap.
- • Develop and execute comprehensive test suites—unit, integration, hardware-in-the-loop, and field regression—to guarantee 24/7 reliability in harsh commercial laundry environments. You will champion automated testing and continuous integration so that every firmware release raises the bar for uptime and security.
- • Provide technical mentorship to junior engineers through code reviews, pair programming, and formal design sessions. Your guidance will accelerate team growth and ensure that best practices in embedded security, power management, and OTA updates become second nature.
- • Contribute to cross-functional R&D initiatives that explore new sensor modalities, alternative payment rails, and edge-machine-learning opportunities. You will prototype quickly, validate with real customer data, and shepherd the most promising ideas into production.
- • Collaborate closely with electrical engineers to review schematics, specify micro-controller requirements, and debug signal-integrity issues using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and soldering stations. Your ability to read a board like a story will shorten bring-up cycles and reduce costly respins.
- • Drive DevOps strategies for firmware deployment, including secure boot, delta updates, rollback mechanisms, and fleet-wide telemetry. You will treat every device as a living part of a distributed system that must stay healthy without truck rolls.
- • Champion security-first design: implement cryptographic protocols for payment data, tamper detection, and secure key storage. You will stay ahead of emerging threats and ensure that Cents maintains PCI and EMV compliance across all hardware generations.
- • Optimize for ultra-low-power consumption and real-time performance on resource-constrained ARM Cortex-M and Cortex-A platforms running Zephyr RTOS or Android-based IoT stacks. Your profiling skills will squeeze every milliamp and millisecond to extend device lifespan and reduce total cost of ownership.
- • Participate in sprint planning, backlog grooming, and retrospectives within an Agile environment. You will balance short-term customer commitments with long-term architectural investments, ensuring that velocity and quality rise together.
- • Represent Cents at industry conferences, customer sites, and hardware vendor meetings. Your ability to articulate technical vision will strengthen partnerships and reinforce our reputation as the undisputed leader in garment-care technology.
🎯 Requirements
- • BS or higher in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field plus 5+ years architecting and shipping embedded firmware for consumer or commercial hardware devices
- • Expert-level C/C++ and Python; comfort with Bash, Java, or Kotlin for tooling and Android-based IoT stacks
- • Demonstrated experience with Zephyr RTOS and/or Android Things, including kernel-space and user-space development on Ubuntu or similar Linux distributions
- • Solid grasp of electrical engineering fundamentals: ability to read schematics, use oscilloscopes, DMMs, and soldering equipment for board-level debugging
- • Proven track record implementing cryptographic solutions—symmetric/asymmetric encryption, secure boot, TLS, certificate management—in constrained environments
🏖️ Benefits
- • Competitive salary of $120–160 k plus meaningful equity in a profitable, fast-growing vertical SaaS company backed by Bessemer, Camber Creek, and Tiger Global
- • Unlimited PTO, paid holidays, and flexible remote-first culture with optional offices in NYC and San Francisco
- • Comprehensive health benefits: medical, dental, vision, mental-health support, parental leave, life & AD&D insurance, and disability coverage
- • 401(k), work-from-home and commuter stipends, plus laundry reimbursements to experience our customers’ services first-hand
