📋 Description

• As Engineering Lead, Growth at Airwallex, you will drive the technical strategy and execution for the Growth team, directly impacting user acquisition and global market expansion by building scalable, high-performance systems that power seamless onboarding and conversion experiences for millions of users worldwide.
• You will partner with Product, Design, and cross-functional stakeholders to define roadmap, prioritize initiatives, and translate customer needs into executable technical plans, ensuring alignment between engineering delivery and business outcomes in a fast-paced, high-visibility environment.
• Day to day, you will own the architecture and technical quality of services and APIs, guiding design reviews, de-risking complex initiatives, and maintaining high engineering standards through code reviews, automated checks, and continuous improvement practices.
• You will establish operational excellence for production systems by implementing monitoring, incident response, postmortems, and reliability improvements, while championing secure coding practices, robust authentication/authorization, and proactive vulnerability management.
• You will lead the evolution of application and platform infrastructure using GCP/AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, and observability tools like Splunk, Grafana, and Prometheus to reduce operational overhead and enhance developer productivity across the team.
• You will mentor and enable engineers by fostering a culture of ownership, curiosity, and first-principles thinking, helping the team ship incrementally, iterate rapidly, and deliver impactful growth features such as referral systems, dynamic funnels, and AI-powered onboarding tools.
• You will work within a global team of over 2,000 innovators across 26 offices, contributing to Airwallex’s mission of building the unified payments and financial platform of the future, backed by $8B valuation and investors like Visa, Mastercard, Sequoia, and Salesforce Ventures.
• In this role, you will grow your technical and leadership expertise by tackling high-impact, ambiguous problems at scale, gaining ownership over critical user-facing systems, and shaping how Airwallex acquires and retains customers worldwide through data-driven experimentation and cutting-edge technology.

🎯 Requirements

• 8+ years of backend engineering experience with deep expertise in distributed systems, high-availability architectures, and designing for availability/consistency challenges
• Proficiency in modern JVM ecosystems (Java 17+, Kotlin, Spring/Spring Boot) including multi-threading, high concurrency, IO/NIO, and network communication
• Expert knowledge of design patterns, microservices architecture, and event-driven/streaming systems (e.g., Kafka)
• Hands-on experience with GCP/AWS, Docker, and Kubernetes, combined with strong grasp of observability tools like Splunk, Grafana, and Prometheus
• Experience developing large-scale system control interfaces and a track record of building API- and integration-heavy systems in production
• Preferred: Experience building scalable growth features (referral systems, dynamic funnels) focused on reducing Time-to-Value, A/B testing frameworks, and AI/LLM integration for personalization
