📋 Description

• Lead the Authentication Services team responsible for building and evolving secure, reliable authentication infrastructure that powers sign-in and identity verification across 1Password’s platform.
• Drive strategic direction and technical vision for the team in alignment with company objectives, collaborating with senior individual contributors to define scalable authentication solutions.
• Manage end-to-end delivery of authentication features and services, from roadmap planning and project scoping to execution, quality assurance, and production operations.
• Provide technical leadership to engineers by guiding complex problem-solving, reviewing architectural decisions, and supporting the team through challenging technical issues without writing code directly.
• Foster a positive, healthy, and high-performing team environment that supports growth, encourages accountability, and challenges engineers to deliver exceptional work.
• Scale the engineering team and its services by refining hiring, onboarding, and development processes in partnership with other Engineering Managers.
• Recruit, retain, and coach top-tier engineering talent in a fast-paced, remote-first environment, helping individual contributors reach their full potential.
• Collaborate with cross-functional partners including Product, Design, and Security teams to define customer-centric authentication solutions for both internal and external users.
• Ensure operational excellence by maintaining high reliability, security, and performance standards for authentication services in production.
• Embrace and actively apply AI tools across the software development lifecycle—using AI-assisted coding, automated testing, and AI-driven prototyping to accelerate delivery without compromising security or quality.
• Promote a culture of continuous learning around AI best practices, encouraging the team to identify meaningful opportunities to integrate AI responsibly into daily workflows.
• Lead remote engineering teams with proven expertise in distributed work, ensuring clear communication, alignment, and collaboration across time zones.
• Participate in required in-person engagements including annual department-wide offsites, team meetings, and industry events as part of 1Password’s remote-first but connection-oriented culture.
• Maintain strict adherence to 1Password’s core values: keep it simple, lead with honesty, and put people first, while operating in a high-expectation, fast-paced environment.
• Support the company’s mission to ensure every identity is authentic, every sign-in is secure, and every device is trusted by delivering enterprise-grade authentication capabilities used by over 180,000 businesses.

🎯 Requirements

• Several years of experience managing a team of engineers and owning and operating a production service
• Deep experience with cloud-native infrastructure and backend technologies
• Proven ability to manage a remote engineering team effectively
• Experience scaling both engineering teams and the services they support
• Ability to provide technical leadership without writing code, guiding teams through complex technical challenges
• Demonstrated success in creating and maintaining a positive, healthy team environment

• Annual base salary between $190,000 USD and $278,000 USD (USA) or $171,000 CAD and $248,000 CAD (Canada)
