Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Own the full-cycle accounting function for a fast-growing, fully-remote law firm that is redefining how sophisticated legal services are delivered. You will design, implement, and run every process that turns legal work into reliable financial insight—from initial client engagement to final WIP write-off.
- • Build and continuously refine a monthly, quarterly, and annual close calendar that delivers GAAP-compliant financial statements to partners within five business days. Your close checklist will become the single source of truth for 100+ timekeepers and the executive team.
- • Partner directly with the CFO and practice-group leaders to translate matter-level data into forward-looking KPIs: realization, leverage, margin by client, and cash conversion cycle. Your dashboards will drive pricing decisions, staffing models, and strategic growth initiatives.
- • Lead the migration from legacy on-premise systems to a cloud-native, best-of-breed tech stack (Intacct, Clio, Adaptive, and Tableau). You will map every GL account, design automated intercompany eliminations, and build drill-down paths that let partners see profitability by lawyer, client, and matter in real time.
- • Design and enforce internal controls that satisfy both ABA and SOX-lite standards: segregation of duties for trust accounts, three-way match for vendor invoices, and dual approval for partner draws. You will be the first line of defense against malpractice and regulatory exposure.
- • Manage global cash across four currencies and six bank accounts, optimizing liquidity while minimizing FX risk. You will negotiate credit facilities, oversee daily sweep accounts, and maintain covenant compliance with a syndicate of boutique lenders.
- • Oversee client billing and collections for a portfolio that ranges from $25K advisory matters to $10M bet-the-company litigation. You will set billing guidelines, train partners on narrative drafting, and personally call Fortune-500 A/R contacts to accelerate cash receipts.
- • Build and mentor a distributed team of three staff accountants and two billing specialists. You will institute weekly stand-ups, quarterly OKRs, and a culture of continuous process improvement measured by close accuracy, DSO, and e-bill acceptance rates.
- • Coordinate year-end audits and tax engagements with Big-4 and AmLaw-100 firms, delivering PBC schedules that are audit-ready on day one. Your relationship management will cut external fees and reduce partner distraction to near zero.
- • Drive pricing innovation by modeling alternative fee arrangements—success fees, collars, and hybrid subscriptions—then tracking performance against budget. Your models will help the firm win marquee engagements while protecting margin.
- • Serve as the financial conscience of the partnership, presenting at monthly partner meetings and quarterly retreats. You will translate complex accounting concepts into plain English so lawyers can make faster, data-driven decisions.
- • Champion a culture of ethical billing and responsible profitability. You will create training decks on IOLTA rules, LEDES formatting, and client-specific billing protocols, ensuring every timekeeper understands how their choices affect firm economics.
- • Spearhead ad-hoc strategic projects: M&A due diligence on potential tuck-in acquisitions, implementation of an AI-driven time-capture tool, and design of a deferred compensation plan for senior associates. No two quarters will look the same.
🎯 Requirements
- • Active CPA license plus 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 3 years in a law firm or other professional-services environment with complex WIP and trust-account requirements.
- • Expert-level command of US GAAP, including ASC 606 revenue recognition for multi-element arrangements and ASC 842 lease accounting.
- • Hands-on proficiency with cloud ERP (Sage Intacct preferred) and legal-specific billing platforms (Clio, Aderant, or Elite); advanced Excel and Tableau skills for dynamic reporting.
- • Demonstrated success leading a month-end close for an organization with >$25M annual revenue, delivering statements within five business days and achieving clean audit opinions.
- • Nice-to-have: Experience with multi-currency consolidations, international tax (Subpart F, GILTI), and alternative fee arrangement modeling.
🏖️ Benefits
- • Fully-remote, results-only work environment—work from any location with a reliable internet connection and quarterly on-site retreats in destinations like Lisbon or Austin.
- • Competitive base salary benchmarked at the 75th percentile for AmLaw-200 controllers, plus an annual performance bonus tied to DSO reduction and realization improvement.
- • Firm-funded professional development: CPA CPE, Intacct certification, and attendance at leading legal-finance conferences (ALA, PwC Law Firm CFO Forum).
- • Comprehensive health, dental, vision, and mental-wellness coverage for you and eligible dependents, plus a 401(k) with 6% dollar-for-dollar match and immediate vesting.
