- • Restore ecological function to freshwater systems in east central Iowa through on-the-ground conservation and restoration activities including wetland restoration, perched culvert repairs, low-head dam removal, in-stream habitat restoration, and floodplain reconnection.
- • Coordinate and oversee freshwater conservation projects focused on improving aquatic biodiversity, fish passage, floodplain connectivity, and natural hydrology.
- • Collaborate with federal, state, and private partners on conservation planning, project implementation, and resource management to maximize conservation outcomes.
- • Conduct community outreach and engagement with landowners, farmers, and local communities through field days, public events, presentations, social media content, and published articles to build support for restoration initiatives.
- • Secure funding for freshwater projects through grant writing, donor solicitation in coordination with the development team, and corporate engagement efforts.
- • Develop and manage project budgets, maintain financial records, and prepare detailed reports for funders and internal stakeholders.
- • Assist in identifying research gaps related to freshwater biodiversity threats and support the design, funding, and execution of monitoring projects including fish and mussel surveys, water quality sampling, and vegetation assessments.
- • Collect, analyze, and manage conservation data to prioritize and plan future restoration efforts using GIS software to produce maps and spatial analyses.
- • Prepare and maintain project packages, conservation plans, and technical reports with attention to scientific accuracy and regulatory compliance.
- • Supervise and manage volunteers, interns, and professional staff including performance management, training, and professional development.
- • Work independently with minimal supervision, making decisions based on analysis, experience, and contextual factors while ensuring compliance with internal policies and external regulations.
- • Perform fieldwork in variable weather conditions, remote locations, hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
- • Travel across Iowa to priority geographies for project implementation, partner meetings, and monitoring activities.
- • Ensure all vehicle use complies with The Nature Conservancy’s Auto Safety Program; must hold a valid driver’s license and pass a motor vehicle record review.
- • Participate in freshwater program budget preparation and monitoring in collaboration with the Freshwater Team.
- • Maintain strong communication skills in English through written, spoken, and graphical formats to effectively convey project goals, findings, and outreach materials.
🎯 Requirements
- • Bachelor’s degree and 3 years of experience in natural resource management or equivalent combination of education and experience
- • Experience coordinating multiple conservation or restoration projects
- • Experience managing staff or volunteers
- • Relationship-building experience with government officials, media, scientists, and private partners
- • Experience completing tasks independently within established timelines
- • Valid driver’s license and compliance with The Nature Conservancy’s Auto Safety Program
