Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • The Frontend Engineer will play a critical role in advancing Home Assistant, a real-time progressive web application used by millions to manage smart home automation, where technical excellence directly impacts user experience, system reliability, and the scalability of an open-source platform at the forefront of privacy-focused home technology.
- • This role is essential for maintaining and evolving a complex, stateful PWA that handles live data from hundreds of devices, requiring deep expertise in modern web standards, performance optimization, and collaborative development within a mission-driven, fully remote organization committed to open-source values.
- • Day-to-day responsibilities include conducting thorough code reviews of pull requests from both internal engineers and community contributors to uphold code quality and identify technical debt; collaborating with product, design, and backend teams to implement new features based on user feedback and specifications; continuously improving the frontend codebase through refactoring, performance tuning, and architectural improvements to ensure long-term maintainability and scalability; actively engaging with the global Home Assistant community by reproducing, diagnosing, and resolving user-reported issues, and creating well-documented, accessible tasks for external contributors; and participating in frontend architecture discussions to shape technical decisions around state management, rendering efficiency, and Web Component usage.
- • The Home Assistant frontend team is a highly skilled, distributed group of engineers passionate about pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in the browser, working within a culture that values technical depth, open collaboration, and user empowerment over shortcuts or framework dependencies.
- • OpenHome Foundation operates as a fully remote, non-profit organization grounded in the principles of digital privacy, user choice, and ecological sustainability, supporting not only Home Assistant but also complementary open-source projects in hardware, standards, and voice technology that collectively advance a more open and responsible smart home ecosystem.
- • In this role, you will deepen your expertise in TypeScript, Lit, Web Components, and real-time PWA architecture while gaining influence over the technical direction of one of the world’s largest open-source projects; you’ll also develop strong community leadership skills by mentoring contributors, advocating for accessibility and usability, and contributing to a workplace that prioritizes well-being, equitable compensation, and meaningful work aligned with personal values.
🎯 Requirements
- • 3+ years of professional TypeScript development experience
- • Hands-on experience with modern frontend frameworks and libraries, including Lit, React, Angular, or Vue
- • Strong grasp of Web Components principles and experience building with Lit or native custom elements
- • Experience developing and optimizing progressive web applications (PWAs) with real-time state management over WebSockets
- • Proficiency with Git and GitHub workflows, including pull requests, code reviews, and merging
- • Professional fluency in English with excellent written and verbal communication skills
- • Current residency in Europe and eligibility to work within the region
🏖️ Benefits
- • Five weeks (25 days) of paid time off annually
- • Fourteen days of paid sick leave (supplemented if local laws treat it as unpaid)
- • Six weeks of paid and six weeks of unpaid parental leave for the first year after birth, with top-up provided if local benefits are insufficient
- • A budget for work hardware upon onboarding
- • 50% contribution to home internet connection fees
- • Opportunity to allocate work time to maintain Home Assistant-related side projects
