Full-Stack NodeJS Software Engineer (Remote)

📋 Description

• • Own the end-to-end delivery of new product capabilities for 1M+ students, alumni, and professionals who rely on PeopleGrove to find mentors, land jobs, and grow their networks. You will design, build, test, and ship features that directly increase engagement and retention across universities like Stanford, Notre Dame, and Fortune-500 companies.
• • Collaborate daily with a tight-knit, fully-remote engineering squad (currently 5 engineers) that practices continuous deployment, weekly retros, and blameless post-mortems. Expect to review PRs, pair program, and debate architecture decisions in Slack threads and Zoom white-boarding sessions.
• • Architect and implement scalable NodeJS micro-services that power real-time chat, video calls, AI-driven mentor matching, and rich analytics dashboards. You’ll refactor legacy Sails.js code into modern, containerized services running on Kubernetes while maintaining 99.9 % uptime for clients in 15 time-zones.
• • Modernize our React + Redux front-end by migrating class components to hooks, introducing design-system components, and optimizing bundle sizes. You’ll also own accessibility (WCAG 2.1) and responsive design so that first-generation college students on low-bandwidth connections have the same premium experience as users on campus Wi-Fi.
• • Build internal tooling that slashes client onboarding time from 4 weeks to 4 days. Recent examples: a drag-and-drop email template builder, a CSV import wizard with live field-mapping, and a self-service theming engine that lets universities brand their portals without engineering help.
• • Establish and evangelize engineering best practices: automated testing (Jest, Cypress), CI/CD with GitHub Actions, infrastructure-as-code with Terraform, and observability via Datadog dashboards and SLOs. You’ll mentor junior developers and run lunch-and-learns on topics like advanced TypeScript patterns or Kubernetes secrets management.
• • Instrument everything. You’ll add event tracking, set up A/B experiments, and analyze funnel metrics to validate that new features actually move the needle on activation and NPS. When numbers dip, you dive into logs, traces, and user recordings to pinpoint root causes.
• • Champion security and privacy. Our users trust us with FERPA-protected student data; you’ll implement encryption at rest, routine penetration testing, and GDPR-compliant data workflows. You’ll also participate in quarterly SOC-2 audits and bug-bounty triage.
• • Contribute to open-source. We maintain forks of Sails and have published packages for Redux-Saga side-effect testing. You’ll be encouraged to upstream bug fixes and speak at meetups or conferences with a yearly professional-development budget.
• • Wear multiple hats in the best start-up tradition: jump on weekend hot-fix rotations, interview future teammates, and join customer-success calls to hear firsthand how your code changes lives.
