Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Lead Waymo’s global incident-response program for the world’s most advanced autonomous-driving fleet, orchestrating real-time crisis management across hardware, software, vehicle operations, and public safety stakeholders.
- • Own the end-to-end lifecycle of high-severity incidents—from first alert to full resolution and post-mortem—ensuring that every minute of downtime or safety exposure is tracked, communicated, and converted into durable system improvements.
- • Build and continuously refine the Incident Command System (ICS) playbooks that let cross-functional teams swarm complex problems within SLA; you will write, test, and drill these run-books so that when a sensor stack anomaly, roadway collision, or cloud-edge connectivity drop occurs, responders act with military precision.
- • Serve as the primary escalation point for a 24×7 follow-the-sun rotation of Site Reliability, Fleet Operations, Security, Legal, Policy, and Communications teams; your calm, data-driven voice will be on every war-room bridge until the “all-clear” is declared.
- • Instrument real-time telemetry dashboards that surface anomaly clusters before they become incidents; you will partner with ML telemetry engineers to tune alert thresholds that balance signal vs. noise, cutting pager fatigue in half while catching regressions 30 % faster.
- • Drive blameless post-mortems that translate field findings into Jira epics for autonomous behavior, perception, mapping, and cloud infrastructure teams; your concise executive summaries regularly reach the CEO and Board, influencing quarterly OKRs and safety road-maps.
- • Coordinate with public-sector agencies (NHTSA, DMV, DOT, NTSB) and external partners to fulfill regulatory reporting obligations within tight statutory windows, positioning Waymo as the transparent industry benchmark for safety accountability.
- • Mentor a growing cohort of Incident Commanders and Scrum Masters, instituting certification paths and simulation exercises that scale our culture of operational excellence as the fleet expands from tens of thousands to millions of miles per week.
- • Champion diversity in crisis-response teams, ensuring that decision-making tables include voices from under-represented groups, and that incident communications reflect inclusive language that builds community trust.
- • Leverage chaos-engineering game-days to validate edge-case recovery: GPS spoofing, cyber-intrusion, sudden weather occlusion, or ride-hail demand spikes; your scenarios will harden both human and machine resilience.
- • Translate technical root causes into crisp, consumer-friendly narratives for riders, municipalities, and media, protecting brand equity while reinforcing Waymo’s safety leadership.
- • Benchmark the program against aerospace, medical-device, and nuclear best practices, obtaining ISO-22301 and ISO-27035 certifications that open new commercial markets and insurer partnerships.
🎯 Requirements
- • 7+ years running large-scale, 24×7 incident-response programs in safety-critical, regulated environments (autonomous vehicles, aerospace, medical devices, or cloud infrastructure) with proven track record of reducing MTTR and recurrence.
- • Expert command of Incident Command System (ICS) or equivalent crisis-management framework, including hands-on experience writing playbooks, training responders, and leading post-mortems that feed directly back into product road-maps.
- • Deep fluency in modern observability stacks (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK, PagerDuty, OpsGenie) and ability to write or review Python/SQL queries that extract actionable signals from petabyte-scale telemetry.
- • Bachelor’s or higher in Computer Science, Systems Engineering, or related STEM field; CISSP, CISM, or PMP certification preferred but not required if compensated by exceptional operational leadership.
🏖️ Benefits
- • Competitive cash + equity compensation with refresher grants, plus a discretionary safety-bonus pool tied to fleet-wide incident-reduction KPIs.
- • Fully remote-first culture with quarterly “Waymo One” off-sites in Mountain View, SF, NYC, and Phoenix—fly you and your family in premium class, all expenses paid.
- • Unlimited PTO policy that actually works: mandatory 15-day minimum, plus annual $2 k wellness stipend for mindfulness retreats, coaching, or whatever keeps you resilient.
- • 100 % employer-paid platinum health, dental, vision for you and dependents, plus 16 weeks gender-neutral parental leave and annual $10 k child-care or elder-care subsidy.
