  • • Manage day-to-day administration and maintenance of Vertex and related indirect tax technology systems to ensure accurate tax determination across OpenAI’s global billing, invoicing, and checkout processes.
  • • Maintain and update tax determination logic, product mappings, jurisdictional rules, and exemption configurations within tax engines to align with evolving business models and regulatory requirements.
  • • Support indirect tax flows across ERP, financial reporting, billing, and payment platforms, ensuring seamless data integration and tax calculation accuracy.
  • • Monitor tax engine performance and proactively troubleshoot issues related to tax calculation errors, integration failures, or data synchronization gaps between systems.
  • • Coordinate and execute tax engine updates, patches, and configuration changes in collaboration with internal cross-functional teams and external software vendors.
  • • Lead testing activities including regression, integration, and user acceptance testing for all tax-related system enhancements, updates, and new jurisdiction onboarding.
  • • Facilitate the onboarding of new products, legal entities, and geographic jurisdictions into existing indirect tax systems, ensuring compliance with local tax regulations.
  • • Perform reconciliation of tax engine outputs with billing system records and ERP financial reports to identify and resolve discrepancies.
  • • Document and maintain operational procedures, system workflows, configuration guides, and support playbooks for indirect tax technology operations.
  • • Partner with Financial Engineering, Product Engineering, and Finance Systems teams to define and implement tax-related data requirements and system integrations.
  • • Support indirect tax audits by providing transaction-level data, system documentation, reconciliation reports, and evidence of compliance controls.
  • • Identify opportunities to automate manual processes, strengthen internal controls, and improve operational efficiency within the indirect tax technology environment.
  • • Serve as a key liaison between the Tax team and technical teams to translate regulatory requirements into actionable system configurations and data workflows.
  • • Ensure all indirect tax systems remain scalable and reliable as OpenAI’s global revenue streams, product offerings, and infrastructure expand.
  • • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of indirect tax regulations in jurisdictions where OpenAI operates to inform system configuration and risk mitigation strategies.
  • • Contribute to the design and enhancement of OpenAI’s modern tax technology stack to match the scalability and reliability of its product architecture.
  • • Support compliance with global tax reporting obligations by ensuring accurate and auditable data capture across all tax-relevant systems.
  • • Participate in cross-functional initiatives to align tax technology with broader finance system modernization and automation goals.
  • • Adhere to OpenAI’s hybrid work model with three days per week in the San Francisco office.

🎯 Requirements

  • • 5+ years of relevant experience supporting indirect tax technology, tax engines, or ERP-related tax processes
  • • Experience working with enterprise tax engines such as Vertex or OneSource
  • • Familiarity with indirect tax processes across billing, invoicing, ERP, and financial systems
  • • Experience supporting tax system configurations, product mappings, taxability rules, and exemption management
  • • Ability to troubleshoot system and tax calculation issues across multiple platforms and integrations
  • • Experience executing testing and supporting system implementations or enhancements
