📋 Description

  • Codes and abstracts diagnosis and procedure information from patient medical records using AHA ICD-10-CM/PCS and AMA CPT-4 coding conventions, UHDDS guidelines, and CMS directives.
  • Utilizes the 3M Encoder to verify and assign AHA ICD-10-CM/PCS and AMA CPT-4 codes, as well as MS-DRG/APR-DRG assignments.
  • Maintains a minimum 95% data quality coding accuracy rate as measured through quarterly department quality reviews.
  • Meets daily productivity and turnaround time standards outlined in the Department’s Performance Improvement plan.
  • Remains current on AHA ICD-9-CM/ICD-10-CM/PCS and AMA CPT-4 coding conventions, MS-DRG and APR-DRG principles, and prospective payment systems related to coding.
  • Participates in scheduled department and sectional meetings, educational sessions, and workshops.
  • Serves as a liaison between inpatient coding professionals and RN clinical documentation specialists within the clinical documentation improvement program.
  • Ensures confidentiality of all patient records and complies with proper release of information protocols.
  • Adheres to Network and departmental policies regarding employee, patient, and environmental safety, including reporting requirements.
  • Models the Network’s core values and Service Excellence Standards of Performance in all internal and external interactions.
  • Demonstrates Performance Improvement in Clinical Care/Outcomes, Customer/Service Improvement, Operational System/Process, and Safety areas.
  • Exhibits financial responsibility through efficient use of resources in daily coding procedures and processes.
  • Follows Network and departmental attendance and dress code policies.
  • Assists in the training of new coding personnel.
  • Performs data entry of abstracted inpatient and outpatient diagnosis and procedure codes into the Network’s health information system.
  • Collaborates with Health Information/Medical Records, Admissions, and Finance departments to ensure accurate and timely information flow.
  • Works day shift with potential for weekend rotations and other hours as necessary.
  • Maintains extended periods of vision use (up to 7 hours per day, 3 hours at a time) reviewing computerized patient records and abstracting information.
  • Sits for up to 7 hours per day, 3 hours at a time, with repetitive arm and finger use for computerized data entry.
  • Requires hearing ability for normal conversation.

🎯 Requirements

  • RHIA, RHIT, CCS, and/or CPC certification from an accredited Health Information Technology or Management program (or must obtain credential within one year of hire if eligible)
  • Minimum 1 year of demonstrated ICD-10-CM inpatient and/or outpatient coding experience in acute care or teaching settings
  • Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and medical terminology
  • Experience with EPIC health information system and 3M encoding system preferred
