Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Join Virtu’s elite development team as a Trading Applications Software Engineer Intern (Front-end) and spend your summer building the user interfaces that power one of the world’s fastest, most reliable electronic trading platforms. You will sit shoulder-to-shoulder with senior engineers who have built ultra-low-latency systems that transact billions of shares daily across 230+ venues in 35+ countries.
- • Own the end-to-end design and delivery of new web-based trading tools used by traders, quants, and risk managers in real time. From wire-framing to pixel-perfect React components, you will translate complex market data into intuitive dashboards that surface critical insights in milliseconds.
- • Optimize rendering performance for tables that can display 100k+ updates per second without dropping a frame. You will profile React render cycles, leverage canvas/WebGL, and experiment with incremental data feeds to keep the UI snappy under extreme throughput.
- • Collaborate with C++ core-engine teams to define WebSocket and REST APIs that stream market data, order flow, and risk metrics. You will write TypeScript interfaces that guarantee type safety from the backend to the last DOM element.
- • Instrument every interaction with OpenTelemetry so traders can replay exactly what they saw when a rare edge-case occurs. Your logging and metrics will feed Grafana dashboards used by SRE teams to maintain 99.99 % uptime.
- • Build configurable, drag-and-drop workspaces that let power users assemble their own “mission control” views. You will architect a plugin system so new micro-frontends can be hot-loaded without redeploying the entire application.
- • Champion accessibility and responsive design so the same tools work flawlessly on a 4K multi-monitor desk setup and a tablet on the trading floor. You will conduct user-testing sessions with actual traders and iterate at sprint speed.
- • Contribute to our shared UI component library—used by 30+ internal applications—ensuring consistency, a11y compliance, and automated visual regression tests with Storybook and Chromatic.
- • Dive into the financial domain: learn how order books, market micro-structure, and latency arbitrage shape interface requirements. You will attend daily “market structure” brown-bags led by senior traders.
- • Present your summer project to the global technology leadership team, including our CTO. Past interns have shipped features that are still in production years later and have returned as full-time engineers.
- • Work fully remote with a best-in-class setup stipend, but still feel tightly integrated through daily video stand-ups, pair-programming in virtual “fishbowl” rooms, and optional co-working weeks in NYC, Austin, or Dublin.
- • Receive mentorship from a dedicated staff-level front-end engineer who will conduct weekly 1:1s, code reviews, and career planning sessions. You will leave with a portfolio piece that demonstrates mastery of high-performance web engineering in the most demanding environment imaginable.
🎯 Requirements
- • Current student pursuing a BS/MS in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related STEM field graduating between December 2024 and June 2026.
- • Production experience with modern JavaScript/TypeScript and at least one reactive UI framework (React strongly preferred). Portfolio or GitHub links demonstrating performant, data-heavy interfaces.
- • Solid grasp of web fundamentals: DOM, event loop, layout/repaint cost, WebSockets, HTTP/2, and browser dev-tools profiling.
- • Nice-to-have: exposure to financial markets, FIX protocol, or trading terminology; experience with canvas/WebGL, Rust/WASM, or real-time streaming libraries such as RxJS or Socket.io.
🏖️ Benefits
- • Competitive intern salary ($10–12k/month) plus one-time $3k remote-office stipend and free ergonomic gear.
- • Housing or travel allowance if you choose to work from any Virtu office (NYC, Austin, Dublin, Singapore).
- • Daily catered lunches delivered via DoorDash credits and monthly wellness stipend for gym, meditation apps, or fitness classes.
- • Full access to Virtu’s internal education platform, including paid courses, conference tickets, and certification exams.
