- • Lead a distributed team of 6–10 data engineers, platform SREs, and security specialists in building cloud-native pipelines that achieve sub-second latency at scale while exceeding SOC-2, FedRAMP, and ISO-27001 controls.
- • Design and evolve our proprietary encryption-in-motion and tokenisation layers that guarantee zero-knowledge data sharing between business units and external partners, cutting compliance review cycles by 40 %.
- • Architect multi-region, active-active clusters on AWS, Azure, and GCP using Terraform, Kubernetes, and custom operators to deliver 99.99 % availability and automatic fail-over in under 30 seconds.
- • Establish data-modeling standards and governance frameworks that unify disparate ERP, CRM, and IoT sources into a single semantic layer, enabling self-service analytics for 5,000+ concurrent users.
- • Champion a culture of rigorous code review, automated testing, and continuous deployment; maintain a 90 %+ unit-test coverage bar and ship to production multiple times per day with zero customer-facing incidents.
- • Partner with product management and customer success to translate complex regulatory requirements into technical epics, ensuring every feature ships with auditable security controls and clear run-books.
- • Optimise compute and storage spend through real-time cost telemetry, rightsizing algorithms, and spot-instance orchestration, delivering a 35 % reduction in annual cloud costs without performance degradation.
- • Mentor senior and mid-level engineers via weekly architecture deep-dives, pair programming, and career-ladder guidance, creating a pipeline of internal promotion and recognised technical leadership.
- • Present at internal tech talks, external conferences, and client workshops to evangelise Akersystems’ security-first approach to data engineering, strengthening our brand as the gold standard for enterprise data trust.
- • Continuously evaluate emerging technologies—delta-lake formats, confidential computing, homomorphic encryption—and run proof-of-concepts that keep our platform three years ahead of industry norms.
- • Define SLIs, SLOs, and error budgets that balance innovation velocity with reliability; lead blameless post-mortems that turn every incident into systemic improvement and shared learning.
🎯 Requirements
- • 8+ years building large-scale, cloud-native data pipelines in production, including deep expertise with Spark, Kafka, Airflow, and columnar storage formats such as Parquet or Iceberg.
- • Proven track record of leading engineering teams in a remote-first environment, with demonstrable experience in hiring, coaching, and performance management across multiple time zones.
- • Hands-on mastery of infrastructure-as-code (Terraform or Pulumi), container orchestration (Kubernetes/EKS/GKE), and CI/CD best practices that enable daily, zero-downtime releases.
- • Expert-level understanding of enterprise security frameworks—encryption at rest and in transit, RBAC/ABAC, secrets management, network micro-segmentation—and the ability to translate them into working code.
- • Nice-to-have: contributions to open-source data projects, published thought leadership on secure data architectures, or advanced degrees in computer science, information security, or related fields.
