- • Forbes Advisor is seeking a highly skilled and innovative Lead Editor, Data Journalism to spearhead our data-driven content initiatives. This pivotal role operates at the dynamic intersection of journalism, advanced automation, and sophisticated data engineering, empowering us to produce trustworthy, large-scale content with unparalleled efficiency.
- • You will be the architect and custodian of the backend systems that underpin our data-driven journalism. This is not a conventional editorial position; while exceptional editorial judgment and a keen journalistic instinct are paramount, the primary focus of this role is editorial automation, with data engineering as a core competency.
- • Your responsibilities will encompass the end-to-end ownership, development, maintenance, and scaling of the intricate pipelines, automations, and workflows that are essential for generating high-volume, high-quality content, including comprehensive best-of lists, in-depth product reviews, and critical rates coverage.
- • You will be an integral part of the Editorial Automation team, collaborating closely with the Sr. Managing Editor to architect and implement content generation at an unprecedented scale.
- • This role is entrusted with the complete automation layer that enables Forbes Advisor's data-driven journalism, from the initial ingestion of raw data through to its meticulous publishing and continuous monitoring.
- • **Own Editorial Automation Infrastructure:**
- • Design, build, and meticulously maintain robust Python-based automation workflows that drive the daily, weekly, and batch production of editorial content at significant scale.
- • Architect and manage GitHub repositories specifically designed to support and version control our automation processes.
- • Implement and meticulously schedule GitHub Actions, ensuring they are precisely timed with data releases and our diverse publishing cadences (daily, weekly, monthly).
- • Guarantee that all automation environments are production-ready, incorporating correct credentials, managing dependencies effectively, and implementing comprehensive error handling protocols.
- • Prepare clean, highly structured datasets optimized for consumption by Natural Language Generation (NLG) platforms and advanced data visualization tools.
- • Actively partner with editorial teammates to translate complex content requirements into scalable, efficient, and automated solutions.
- • **Build & Maintain Data Pipelines:**
- • Create, manage, and optimize BigQuery tables to ensure efficient data storage and retrieval.
- • Develop sophisticated processes to pull, normalize, and validate data from a variety of sources, including APIs, spreadsheets, Tableau dashboards, and internal data repositories.
- • Engineer reusable Python packages to standardize API access, authentication mechanisms, and workflow logic, fostering consistency and efficiency across the broader team.
- • Proactively debug and resolve data or pipeline failures, serving as the primary escalation point for complex technical challenges.
- • **Metrics, Reliability & Trust:**
- • Develop comprehensive workflows to meticulously log data usage, API credit consumption, automation run statuses, and template utilization.
- • Build insightful reporting and intuitive dashboards to continuously monitor the reliability and operational health of all automation pipelines.
- • Support and implement correction processes efficiently when vendors report errors or when methodologies undergo significant changes.
- • Play a crucial role in ensuring that all automated content rigorously adheres to Forbes Advisor's stringent standards for accuracy, transparency, and unwavering editorial trust.
- • **Cross-Functional Collaboration:**
- • Work in close partnership with Editorial, SEO, data research, and engineering teams to identify and implement innovative automation opportunities.
- • Contribute to the definition and dissemination of best practices and standards for data journalism and content automation across all relevant teams.
- • Provide essential technical guidance and mentorship to teammates operating in less technical roles, fostering a collaborative and knowledgeable environment.

🎯 Requirements
- • 8-10 years of experience in journalism, data journalism, data engineering, or a closely related field, demonstrating a strong track record of success.
- • Advanced proficiency in Python and SQL, with proven experience in building production-grade data pipelines and complex data workflows.
- • Strong hands-on experience with cloud data warehouses, with a preference for Google BigQuery, and a solid understanding of their architecture and capabilities.
- • Extensive experience with GitHub, including version control best practices and implementing CI/CD-style workflows, particularly GitHub Actions for automation.
- • Familiarity with working with APIs, understanding various authentication systems, and integrating with third-party data providers to extract and process information.
- • A deep understanding of data integrity, transparency principles, and the ethical considerations inherent in journalistic practices.
- • Proven ability to operate independently, effectively prioritize tasks, and manage complex systems within a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
