📋 Description

• The Learning Engineer role at Playlab Inc. supports the AI Lab Schools cohort, a 24-month partnership with 13 schools redesigning teaching and learning around AI, where the engineer serves as an embedded technical partner to help schools build, pilot, and scale custom AI tools aligned with their pedagogy.
• Day to day, the Learning Engineer will support 2–3 lab schools through monthly leader check-ins, weekly build sessions, and on-call support; partner with a Senior Learning Engineer to deliver consistent technical assistance; co-build bespoke AI tools like assessment platforms and lesson planners with educators; contribute to an open-source playbook; run coaching sessions via office hours and 1:1 video; co-facilitate quarterly convenings; grow craft through mentorship and build reviews; and bring field insights back to shape Playlab’s platform and learning materials.
• Playlab is a tech non-profit dedicated to empowering educators and students as critical consumers and creators of AI through open-source tools and professional development, with over 40,000 educators having published apps on its platform and backing from major foundations including Gates, Google, CZI, and Schwab.
• In this role, the Learning Engineer will deepen their practice in AI-in-education design, gain experience supporting systemic school change, contribute to a field-shaping open-source resource, grow alongside senior practitioners in a mission-driven team, and develop expertise in balancing technical craft with equitable, pedagogy-centered innovation.

🎯 Requirements

• 3+ years of classroom, instructional coaching, or school-based experience
• Track record of shipping AI tools with hunger to grow into advanced patterns (multi-step flows, evaluator loops, knowledge grounding, agentic design)
• Experience supporting educators with patience and high standards in equal measure
• Strong async and remote-first instincts, able to build trust over video and shared docs
• Confidence with prompting and AI app design, understanding real classroom use by teachers and students
• Solid documentation craft (build logs, walkthroughs, recorded sessions) that enables others to learn
• Commitment to equity and access at the center of the work
• Willingness to commit to the full 24-month cohort cadence, including four quarterly three-day convenings
