Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Own the entire legal function for Hyphenconnect’s construction portfolio, acting as the single point of accountability for every contract, claim, dispute, and regulatory filing across the UK.
- • Draft, negotiate, and close a high volume of construction-related agreements—JCT, NEC3/4, FIDIC, bespoke EPC, framework, supply-chain, and professional-services contracts—ensuring terms protect margin, allocate risk fairly, and align with the company’s growth strategy.
- • Provide front-line support to project directors and commercial managers from pre-qualification through final account, translating complex legal issues into pragmatic, business-focused advice that keeps schemes on programme and within budget.
- • Design and maintain a scalable contract-management system: create clause libraries, playbooks, and approval matrices that allow non-lawyers to self-serve on low-risk matters while escalating only what truly needs legal eyes.
- • Lead on all contentious matters—adjudication, arbitration, litigation, and mediation—selecting and instructing external counsel where required, managing budgets, and driving strategies that preserve commercial relationships while vigorously defending the company’s position.
- • Monitor and interpret evolving UK construction legislation, building-safety reforms, planning policy, ESG requirements, and health-and-safety regulations, translating changes into actionable guidance for site teams and board members.
- • Partner with finance, insurance, and risk teams to structure project-specific policies (CAR, PI, environmental, latent defects) and ensure indemnities, warranties, and bonds dovetail with internal risk appetite and client expectations.
- • Champion a culture of compliance across remote and site-based teams by delivering concise training modules on contract administration, record-keeping, and dispute avoidance, measured through quarterly KPIs and audit results.
- • Support strategic bids and joint ventures by carrying out legal due diligence, drafting shareholder agreements, and advising on corporate structures that optimise tax, liability, and governance outcomes.
- • Report directly to the executive leadership team, presenting legal dashboards that quantify exposure, track claim trends, and demonstrate how proactive legal input safeguards EBITDA and enhances enterprise value.
- • Act as the ethical compass of the organisation, ensuring modern-slavery, bribery, and sustainability obligations are embedded in procurement criteria and subcontractor onboarding processes.
- • Continuously improve: benchmark external counsel fees, pilot legal-tech solutions (e-signature, AI review tools), and refine playbooks so the legal function scales faster than the project pipeline.
🎯 Requirements
- • UK-qualified solicitor or barrister with a current practising certificate and at least 5 years’ PQE gained in top-tier construction practices or in-house with major UK contractors or developers.
- • Deep, hands-on expertise with JCT, NEC3/4, and FIDIC suites, evidenced by a track record of negotiating high-value (≥£50 m) construction and engineering contracts from first draft to close.
- • Demonstrated experience managing adjudication, arbitration, and litigation proceedings under the Housing Grants, Construction and Regeneration Act and the Arbitration Act 1996.
- • Strong working knowledge of UK building-safety legislation (Building Safety Act 2022, CDM 2015), planning law, and health-and-safety regulations affecting construction projects.
- • Exceptional stakeholder-management skills with the ability to distil complex legal concepts into clear, commercial advice for non-lawyers operating under tight deadlines.
🏖️ Benefits
- • Fully remote working arrangement with flexible hours and a £1,500 home-office set-up allowance.
- • Competitive base salary benchmarked at the 75th percentile for in-house construction counsel plus an annual performance bonus of up to 25 %.
- • 30 days’ holiday (plus UK bank holidays) and an extra discretionary day off for your birthday.
- • Private medical insurance, life assurance (4× salary), and income-protection cover for you and your immediate family.
