- • The Life Insurance & Voluntary Programs Specialist supports the design, administration, and continuous improvement of GM’s U.S. benefit programs, with a focus on life insurance and voluntary benefit programs, playing a critical role in ensuring employees receive accurate, compliant, and valuable benefits.
- • Day to day, the specialist manages program operations and governance by maintaining plan provisions and eligibility rules, developing program guides and training materials, supporting internal controls and audits, serving as a subject matter expert for voluntary benefits, aligning benefits with core programs, and supporting UAW-GM National Union Negotiations with data and implementation considerations.
- • The role involves case, claim, and appeals support by acting as an escalation point for complex claims, compiling case documentation for Plan Administrators and decision makers, drafting ERISA- and DOL-compliant acknowledgment and decision letters, and identifying trends for process improvement.
- • The specialist oversees vendor and TPA management by monitoring SLAs and KPIs, supporting RFPs and renewals, ensuring accurate implementation of plan changes and file layouts, managing vendor invoicing and payments, and coordinating system access and data security needs with Finance, Procurement, and IT.
- • In data, analytics, compliance, and projects, the role includes preparing recurring and ad hoc reports on claims, costs, and participation, using Excel, PowerPoint, Power BI, or Tableau to highlight insights, supporting budgeting and insurance filings, ensuring alignment with ERISA, IRS, and DOL regulations, identifying opportunities to simplify and automate processes, and partnering with HRIS/IT/Security on eligibility interfaces and responsible AI use.
- • Stakeholder partnership and communication involve collaborating with HR, Labor Relations, Legal, Payroll, Finance, plant leadership, UAW Benefit Representatives, and the International UAW, translating technical requirements into clear guidance for employees and leaders, preparing materials for leadership and governance forums, and serving as a key liaison for Labor Relations and UAW stakeholders on life insurance and voluntary benefit topics.
- • The role offers exposure to senior Total Rewards, Labor, Legal, HR, and Finance leaders, a culture focused on continuous improvement and data-driven decisions, and the opportunity to work on high-impact benefit programs in a remote-first environment with occasional hub-based expectations.
🎯 Requirements
- • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business, Finance, Risk Management, Actuarial Science, or a related field.
- • 5+ years of experience in employee benefits with meaningful exposure to life and AD&D/survivor benefits.
- • Advanced Excel and data analysis skills, including experience with large datasets and tools such as Power BI or Tableau.
- • Proven ability to manage details and multiple deadlines with high accuracy.
- • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to create employee-friendly explanations and professional correspondence.
- • Demonstrated collaboration with HR, Legal, vendors/TPAs, and union benefit representatives.
