📋 Description

• Lead and develop a team of mechanical engineers responsible for the design of clinical medical devices, from concept through to validated production, ensuring alignment with design inputs and regulatory requirements.
• Own the mechanical engineering workstream, personally contributing to complex design tasks including 3D CAD modeling, tolerance analysis, FEA simulation, and design for manufacture and assembly (DFM/DFA).
• Drive design reviews, risk assessments, and verification & validation (V&V) activities for mechanical subsystems to ensure robust performance before design freeze.
• Establish and maintain mechanical design standards, toolchains (CAD, PDM), and documentation compliant with CoMind’s QMS, ISO 13485, and IEC 60601-1.
• Manage cross-functional integration of mechanical systems with optical, electronic, and manufacturing subsystems, resolving interface challenges to ensure system-level functionality.
• Collaborate closely with contract manufacturers and key suppliers to support design for manufacture (DFM), manufacturing readiness reviews, and smooth transition to serial production.
• Mentor mechanical engineers by setting clear development goals, providing technical guidance, and fostering a culture of high engineering standards and continuous improvement.
• Ensure all mechanical designs meet the performance, reliability, and safety demands of a clinical medical device used in patient care.
• Actively integrate AI into daily workflows as a core part of CoMind’s innovation culture, identifying and implementing AI-driven improvements in design, analysis, and collaboration.
• Maintain strong communication with Product and Program Management to align mechanical development with program milestones and product roadmap.
• Oversee the complete lifecycle of mechanical components and assemblies, including prototyping, testing, design iteration, and final production release.
• Ensure all mechanical deliverables are traceable, documented, and compliant with medical device regulatory frameworks and internal quality systems.
• Represent the Mechanical Engineering team in system-level technical discussions, translating mechanical constraints and capabilities into broader product decisions.
• Support the implementation and maintenance of design control processes across the mechanical engineering function.
• Work at least four days per week in the office at either the London (Kings Cross) or Bristol location, with one flexible remote day per week.

🎯 Requirements

• 8+ years of experience in mechanical engineering, with at least 2 years in a team lead or engineering management role
• Hands-on experience designing precision mechanical or optomechanical systems with a track record of delivering complex hardware products from concept to validated production
• Proficiency with 3D CAD tools (SolidWorks or equivalent) and associated tools for tolerance analysis, FEA, and thermal modelling
• Experience designing for manufacture and assembly (DFM/DFA), including managing relationships with contract manufacturers and component suppliers
• Experience in a regulated industry (medical devices, defence, or similar), with familiarity with IEC 60601, ISO 14971, ISO 13485, and design control processes
• Strong cross-functional communication skills, with the ability to represent the mechanical team in system-level technical discussions
