  • • The Media Partnerships Lead at the Wikimedia Foundation will drive strategic collaborations with media companies, social platforms, and mission-aligned organizations to amplify Wikipedia’s global visibility and credibility, ensuring the world’s most beloved free knowledge brand reaches new audiences through trusted channels.
  • • This role is pivotal in advancing Wikimedia’s mission by transforming brand awareness into meaningful engagement, leveraging partnerships to expand reader reach, content reuse, and thought leadership in an increasingly competitive media landscape.
  • • Day-to-day responsibilities include building and nurturing relationships with media and publishing industry champions to co-create speaking opportunities, panels, and thought leadership events that elevate Wikipedia’s brand narrative.
  • • The Lead will establish and maintain strategic ties with social media platform representatives to optimize Wikipedia-branded publishing impact, working closely with the Social Media team to align short- and long-term goals.
  • • They will collaborate with the Brand Studio’s Global Brand Manager and Brand Strategists to drive off-platform visibility initiatives, ensuring consistent brand positioning across all external touchpoints.
  • • Close partnership with Product + Technology and Global Advocacy teams will support reader growth and content reuse objectives, integrating partnership efforts into broader product and advocacy strategies.
  • • The role requires identifying and pursuing new platforms and opportunities to share Wikipedia’s key messages at scale, particularly within mission-aligned organizations and media ecosystems.
  • • The Media Partnerships Lead will educate and inspire internal stakeholders — including WMF staff and Wikipedia volunteers — on the value and mechanics of media partnership development, fostering organizational alignment.
  • • Operating within the Wikimedia Foundation Brand Studio, an in-house creative and brand service group inside the Communications Department, the Lead will work cross-functionally with PR, executive communications, and Commercial Partnerships (Enterprise) teams.
  • • The Brand Studio functions as a collaborative hub where brand strategy, creative execution, and stakeholder engagement converge to strengthen Wikipedia’s global presence.
  • • This role offers the opportunity to shape how one of the world’s most trusted knowledge platforms is perceived and shared globally, directly contributing to the Wikimedia mission of free knowledge for all.
  • • Success in this position means building sustainable, mission-driven partnerships that not only increase visibility but also deepen public understanding of Wikipedia’s role as a neutral, community-powered knowledge commons.

🎯 Requirements

  • • Minimum 8 years of experience in media partnerships, brand strategy, or related fields, with proven ability to broker global partnerships across diverse audiences and media landscapes.
  • • Demonstrated experience working with brands that have community stakeholders, where decision-making is diffuse and volunteers play a key role in brand positioning and advocacy.
  • • Established network of connections within the media, technology, publishing, and social media ecosystems capable of unlocking mission-aligned collaboration opportunities.
  • • Strong understanding of core brand strategy frameworks including research, data analysis, brief writing, and brand positioning, applied to partnership development.
  • • Proven track record of thriving in collaborative, consensus-driven environments across disciplines such as PR, Product, Design, and Donor Relations.
  • • Excellent communication, persuasion, and storytelling skills, with the ability to educate and inspire internal and external stakeholders about partnership value.

🏖️ Benefits

  • • Competitive, equitable salary range of $114,758 to $177,097 for U.S.-based applicants, adjusted for cost of living and individual factors, with no consideration of salary history.
  • • Remote-first work model with hiring eligibility across 40+ countries, including the U.S., Canada, Germany, India, Japan, and others, supported by local Employer of Record arrangements where needed.
  • • Comprehensive benefits package including health, dental, vision, retirement plans, and generous time off, aligned with the Foundation’s values of equity and well-being.
  • • Opportunity to work with a mission-driven nonprofit that powers Wikipedia and supports free knowledge access for everyone, everywhere.
  • • Access to professional development resources and manager-supported upskilling, encouraging continuous learning and growth.
  • • Inclusive, diverse workplace culture with strong commitments to equity, belonging, and accessibility, including accommodations for applicants with disabilities.
