📋 Description

• As a Member of Technical Staff, Backend at Vapi Technologies Inc., you will play a pivotal role in advancing the company’s mission to make voice the default interface for human-computer interaction. With over 600,000 developers already using the platform and 2,000+ new developers joining daily, your contributions will directly impact the scalability, reliability, and innovation of a rapidly growing voice agent infrastructure that serves businesses worldwide.
• You will design, build, and maintain high-performance backend systems that power Vapi’s configurable voice agent platform, ensuring low-latency, high-throughput processing of voice interactions across global telephony and messaging channels. Your work will enable developers to deploy sophisticated voice agents with minimal friction, accelerating the adoption of voice as a primary interface in customer service, sales, and operational workflows.
• Day-to-day responsibilities include: developing and optimizing core services in the voice agent pipeline, including speech-to-text, natural language understanding, dialogue management, and text-to-speech integrations; building and maintaining APIs that are robust, well-documented, and designed for long-term usability; implementing real-time streaming architectures to support live voice conversations; contributing to observability, logging, and monitoring systems to ensure 99.9%+ uptime; collaborating with frontend and product teams to define and ship end-to-end features; participating in code reviews, design discussions, and blameless postmortems to continuously improve system quality; and experimenting with emerging techniques in reinforcement learning and prompt engineering to enhance agent behavior and adaptability.
• You will also own large-scale, end-to-end projects such as integrating WhatsApp as a voice channel, designing auto-RL (reinforcement learning) loops for agent improvement, and creating customer-facing APIs that balance flexibility with simplicity—aiming to build interfaces that ‘last a century’ in their clarity and reliability.
• The backend engineering team at Vapi is composed of highly autonomous, founder-minded engineers who thrive in ambiguous, fast-moving environments. Seventy percent of the company consists of previous founders, fostering a culture of ownership, initiative, and deep technical curiosity. You will work closely with the founders, Jordan and Nikhil, who bring a Canadian-rooted emphasis on kindness, collaboration, and long-term thinking, creating a workplace where technical excellence is paired with human-centered values.
• In this role, you will have the opportunity to work on one of the most ambitious technical challenges in applied AI: making voice interactions feel natural, reliable, and universally accessible. You will gain deep expertise in real-time audio processing, scalable microservices, AI agent orchestration, and API design for developer platforms. Over time, you will evolve from executing tasks to shaping technical strategy, influencing how voice technology is adopted across industries, and potentially mentoring others as the team scales. Your work will not only ship features but help define the future of human-AI interaction.

🎯 Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience
• 3+ years of professional backend software engineering experience, with strong proficiency in languages such as Python, Go, or Rust
• Proven experience building and scaling distributed systems, APIs, or real-time data pipelines in production environments
• Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure), containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and infrastructure-as-code tools
• Strong understanding of networking, protocols (HTTP/WebSocket/gRPC), and latency-sensitive system design
• Bonus: Experience with voice technologies, speech recognition, telephony (Twilio, Vonage), or AI agent frameworks
