  • • Provides technical and analytical support as a networking specialist for enterprise network planning, troubleshooting, security, and system administration, ensuring reliable connectivity and performance across the university’s infrastructure.
  • • Serves as a tier-three resource for network performance and connectivity issues, assisting the Network Operation Center (NOC) and collaborating with the Security Operations Center (SOC) to resolve complex network problems and establish policies.
  • • Configures and manages central network components including firewalls, VPN gateways, wireless controllers, and core/distribution layers to support end users and departments across data, voice, video, and VoIP networks.
  • • Stays current with emerging technologies in routing, switching, wireless, and security, prepares and maintains detailed network documentation, and contributes to technology evaluation, testing, and implementation guidelines.
  • • Works in a normal office environment with standard office equipment, requiring typical desk-based work and offering remote flexibility as part of the WashU IT team.
  • • Part of Washington University in St. Louis’ IT division, supporting the institution’s mission through secure, scalable, and innovative network services that enable academic, research, and operational excellence.

🎯 Requirements

  • • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as Computer Science, Information Technology, or Engineering.
  • • Minimum of two years of professional experience in network design, including hands-on work with routing, switching, and network architecture.
  • • Demonstrated experience configuring and managing enterprise network components such as firewalls, VPN gateways, wireless controllers, and core/distribution switches.
  • • Strong understanding of networking fundamentals including TCP/IP, VLANs, routing protocols (OSPF, BGP), and network security principles.
  • • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for documenting network configurations, collaborating with teams, and supporting end users.
  • • Ability to work effectively in a team environment, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple responsibilities in a dynamic IT setting.
