Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • As a Principal Engineer in Product Engineering at 1Password, you will define the technical direction for AI-powered security capabilities, shaping how artificial intelligence is responsibly integrated into identity and access management systems used by over 180,000 businesses worldwide. This role is pivotal in ensuring that AI enhances security without compromising privacy, auditability, or user trust—turning cutting-edge innovation into production-grade, enterprise-ready solutions.
- • You will architect and own the end-to-end design of AI-integrated security features across client, service, and policy layers, establishing reference architectures, technical standards, and operating models that prioritize privacy-preserving design, on-device processing where possible, and auditable behavior under real-world constraints. Your work will span from prototype to production, setting the bar for how AI is used in high-stakes security contexts.
- • You will define critical system behaviors including signal collection and retention policies, control models for agentic and tool-using AI systems, and platform primitives that enable other teams to build AI features safely and consistently—covering model invocation, policy evaluation, tool execution, experimentation, telemetry, and evaluation frameworks.
- • You will partner early with Security, Privacy, Legal, and Compliance teams to embed trust, regulatory, and data-handling requirements into the architecture from the outset, ensuring that AI systems meet enterprise scrutiny and adversarial conditions while maintaining transparency and user control.
- • You will establish operational excellence for AI in production by defining service expectations, evaluation frameworks, rollout controls, rollback paths, abuse testing, and incident playbooks, raising the bar for reliability, safety, and measurable impact in AI-assisted security.
- • You will lead through technical influence across teams, making durable architecture decisions, communicating complex tradeoffs clearly to engineers and executives, and driving delivery across complex dependencies—shaping technical direction well beyond any single codebase.
- • You will contribute to 1Password’s mission of building a safe, productive digital future by helping reduce credential-related risk, enabling faster and safer responses to threats, increasing admin confidence in AI-assisted controls, and delivering product experiences that enhance security without introducing opaque automation.
🎯 Requirements
- • Proven experience building and operating production systems where trust, correctness, and failure handling are critical, particularly in security-sensitive domains such as identity, authentication, authorization, secrets management, or endpoint trust.
- • Deep expertise in AI/ML systems in production, including hands-on experience with LLM-integrated systems featuring explicit guardrails, evaluation pipelines, auditable tool use, and clear limits on autonomous behavior.
- • Strong background in privacy-preserving design, including client-side or edge inference, constrained telemetry, explainable system behavior, and predictable user-facing outcomes in security or privacy-critical applications.
- • Demonstrated ability to set technical direction across multiple teams, make lasting architecture decisions, and drive delivery through complex dependencies in fast-paced, high-stakes environments.
- • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical tradeoffs clearly and persuasively to engineers, executives, and cross-functional partners in security, privacy, legal, and compliance.
🏖️ Benefits
- • Competitive base salary ranging from $246,000 to $369,000 USD (US-based) or $228,000 to $342,000 CAD (Canada-based), plus immediate enrollment in comprehensive health, dental, and retirement benefits (401k or RRSP matching).
- • Equity grant (RSU program) and eligibility for incentive programs, aligning long-term rewards with company performance and individual impact.
- • Generous paid time off policy, maternity and parental leave top-up, and access to free 1Password accounts for personal use.
- • Remote-first work environment with flexibility to work from home in the US or Canada, supported by a culture built on distributed collaboration since 2005.
- • Opportunities for professional growth through challenging technical work, access to cutting-edge AI and security technologies, and a culture that values learning, feedback, and innovation.
- • Paid volunteer days, peer-to-peer recognition via Bonusly, and participation in company-wide offsites and team events to foster connection and belonging.
