📋 Description

• As a Principal Software Engineer on the Edge Team at Airwallex, you will take full ownership of the company’s external traffic infrastructure, shaping how global customers securely and efficiently access its unified payments and financial platform. This P5 architect role sits at the critical intersection of platform engineering, security, and product velocity, where your technical leadership will directly impact the reliability, performance, and safety of services used by over 200,000 businesses worldwide, including industry leaders like Brex, Qantas, and SHEIN.
• You will design and evolve the architecture for Airwallex’s edge networking stack, encompassing API gateways, DNS services, CDNs, and Global Accelerators, ensuring seamless routing, filtering, throttling, and global traffic optimization across hybrid and multi-cloud environments. Your work will establish the foundational blueprint for how all external traffic enters and interacts with the platform, enabling low-latency, high-availability access to core services such as payments, onboarding, and authentication.
• In partnership with the InfoSec team, you will define and enforce border security mechanisms, including DDoS protection, bot mitigation, anomaly detection, rate limiting, QoS policies, firewall governance, and intrusion prevention systems at the network edge. You will ensure that security controls are robust yet developer-friendly, protecting financial workloads without compromising agility or user experience.
• You will build end-to-end processes and tooling for policy-driven API route management, defining governance frameworks for route registration, approval, change management, and lifecycle auditing. By collaborating with platform and microservices teams, you will enforce compliance, improve observability, and create internal tools that streamline how engineers expose public APIs securely and consistently across the organization.
• You will establish reliability and quality of service (QoS) goals for critical traffic paths, tune latency and failover mechanisms, and design for backbone traffic replication across regions to ensure resilient, scalable performance. Your strategic vision will drive the evolution of Airwallex’s edge strategy, balancing innovation with operational rigor in a fast-moving, globally distributed environment.
• You will mentor and influence engineers across teams, fostering a culture of ownership, curiosity, and first-principles thinking. By leading cross-functional initiatives and advocating for best practices in cloud-native networking, you will help elevate the technical bar while enabling teams to move fast with good judgment—core to Airwallex’s operating principles.

🎯 Requirements

• Deep experience in cloud-native edge networking, including hands-on expertise with API gateways (e.g., Kong, Apisix, NGINX/OpenResty, Envoy), DNS services, CDNs, Global Accelerators, and cloud firewall/WAF systems.
• Proficiency with SDN concepts and tools, familiarity with major cloud providers (AWS, GCP, Azure), and experience designing hybrid/multi-cloud traffic engineering solutions at scale.
• Proven ability to define and enforce cross-team governance frameworks, particularly in security-sensitive areas such as DDoS protection, rate limiting, bot mitigation, and intrusion prevention, with strong communication and leadership skills to influence engineering and InfoSec teams.
