- • The Production Underwriter at Brown & Brown Insurance’s Bridge Specialty Group plays a critical role in evaluating and managing risk for commercial insurance policies, directly impacting the company’s ability to underwrite profitable business while maintaining compliance and customer satisfaction. This role is essential to growing a sustainable book of business in specialty lines such as construction, environmental liability, and professional liability, where precise risk assessment drives both underwriting integrity and market competitiveness.
- • Day-to-day responsibilities include examining application forms, inspection reports, medical records, and insurance maps to assess risk based on financial standing, age, occupation, accident history, and property condition; reviewing company records to determine existing insurance exposure and potential for catastrophic or excessive loss; underwriting or brokering risks by ensuring complete documentation, accurate quoting, timely policy issuance, proper state filings, and timely tax payments in accordance with state regulations; analyzing submissions from producers to develop premium indications, quotes, and binders for new and renewal business, often utilizing inspection companies for additional data; marketing and meeting with retail agency partners to cultivate relationships and grow the book of business; understanding and extending company facilities through binding authorities or brokering when necessary to secure placements; ensuring correct coding on required forms; servicing and retaining existing business while actively pursuing new opportunities; training and guiding processors and assistants to improve accuracy, reduce clerical workload, and develop foundational underwriting skills; and fostering collaboration across internal teams, producers, carriers, and even competitors to enhance placement success and industry knowledge.
- • The Bridge Specialty Group team operates within Brown & Brown Insurance, a nationally recognized leader in insurance distribution with over 2,000 teammates across the U.S. and Europe. The group specializes in niche markets through more than 25 focused brands, offering deep expertise in construction, general casualty, environmental liability, professional liability, healthcare, public entity, workers’ compensation, property, and personal lines. - • In this role, the Production Underwriter will develop advanced expertise in excess and surplus lines underwriting, refine technical proficiency in ISO manuals, rating plans, and policy forms, and gain hands-on experience in risk selection, pricing strategy, and broker-producer relationship management. The position offers clear pathways to professional growth through mentorship opportunities, pursuit of CIC or CPCU designations, and exposure to complex commercial risks across multiple industries—building a strong foundation for advancement into senior underwriting, team leadership, or specialty management roles within the organization.
🎯 Requirements
- • Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university is desired, or alternatively, five years of insurance experience with at least two years as an underwriting assistant.
- • CIC or CPCU candidate status, or thorough familiarity with applicable ISO manuals, forms, rating plans, policy forms, coverages, exclusions, conditions, and terms.
- • Valid Property & Casualty (P&C) state license and Excess & Surplus (E&S) license required for underwriting authority.
- • Proficiency with MS Office Suite and experience operating in a paperless work environment.
- • Proven experience in excess and surplus lines underwriting, either at an agency or carrier.
- • Acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) at time of hire and periodically thereafter, with maintenance of minimum acceptable personal auto insurance coverage, as travel—including personal or rental vehicle use—is required for this role.
