📋 Description
- • ICF International seeks an on-call Project Director – Education Research to lead high-impact initiatives within the Child and Family Well-Being (CFWB) Line of Business, driving research-based technical assistance, training, and coaching for education stakeholders nationwide. This role is critical in advancing evidence-based practices that improve educational outcomes for children and families by bridging rigorous research with real-world application in PreK–20 settings.
- • The Project Director will serve as a strategic leader and trusted advisor to federal, state, and local education agencies—including the U.S. Department of Education—ensuring projects are delivered with scientific rigor, operational excellence, and deep stakeholder engagement while maintaining budget, timeline, and quality standards.
- • Day-to-day responsibilities include leading and managing large-scale, multi-year education research projects; designing and executing peer-reviewed studies using causal and correlational methodologies; planning and delivering tailored technical assistance, training, and coaching to educators, policymakers, and program administrators; establishing and sustaining partnerships with state policymakers and education leaders; managing subcontractor teams and vendor relationships; monitoring project budgets and schedules to ensure financial and temporal compliance; translating complex research findings into accessible, actionable reports and presentations for diverse audiences; and synthesizing input from varied stakeholders to align project deliverables with evolving needs and priorities.

- • In this role, the successful candidate will deepen their expertise in education policy and evaluation science, expand their influence as a thought leader in researcher-practitioner partnerships, and strengthen their ability to lead complex, multidisciplinary teams in high-stakes environments. They will gain experience shaping federal and state education initiatives, contributing to peer-reviewed literature, and driving business development through proposal writing and capture efforts—positioning themselves for senior leadership roles within ICF or the broader education research and consulting field.
🎯 Requirements
- • Doctorate in Education, Public Policy, Social Science, or a related discipline
- • 10+ years of progressive experience in education research and/or evaluation, including leading large-scale projects
- • Proven experience designing and conducting peer-reviewed education research studies using causal and correlational research designs
- • Demonstrated success in planning and executing research-based technical assistance, training, and coaching for education stakeholders
- • Established connections with state policymakers and education leaders, with ability to engage and maintain productive relationships
- • Experience leading, managing, and supervising multidisciplinary teams and subcontractors in remote or hybrid environments
- • Exceptional communication skills, with ability to translate complex scientific and technical concepts into clear, accessible language for non-technical audiences
- • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities, coupled with meticulous attention to detail and a track record of meeting tight deadlines
- • Proven ability to manage project schedules, control budgets, and oversee financial and operational aspects of complex initiatives
- • Collaborative leadership style, adept at navigating competing priorities and diverse stakeholder perspectives
- • Capable of working independently and as part of a team in a fully remote setting, with strong self-direction and virtual collaboration skills
