  • • As the newly appointed Data Engineering Team Lead for the Market Data team at RoomPriceGenie, you will spearhead the creation and development of a critical new capability within our organization. This pivotal role offers a unique opportunity to shape a foundational element of our data infrastructure, centralizing and professionalizing the acquisition, structuring, and scaling of external data sources across the company.
  • • This initiative marks a significant evolution from distributed, ad-hoc efforts to a dedicated, scalable, and best-practice-driven data platform. You will be instrumental in transforming how RoomPriceGenie leverages external market intelligence to enhance its core product and drive business growth.
  • • This is a hands-on leadership position, perfectly suited for an individual with prior experience managing engineers and a strong desire to further hone their management skills. You will maintain a significant technical involvement, dedicating time to coding, code reviews, and pair programming, while simultaneously fostering clarity, focus, and technical excellence within your team.
  • • You will forge a close partnership with Product and engineering leadership to collaboratively define the team's roadmap, establish robust technical foundations, and cultivate a high-performing, empowered team culture. Your leadership will be key to ensuring the team's success and its contribution to RoomPriceGenie's strategic objectives.
  • • Your core responsibilities will encompass building, leading, and developing a team of talented backend and data engineers. This includes fostering a strong team identity, instilling a deep sense of ownership, and cultivating a high-performance culture from the outset.
  • • You will drive the architectural design of scalable, maintainable, and cost-efficient data acquisition and transformation systems. This involves setting standards for system design, implementing rigorous testing methodologies, ensuring robust observability, and maintaining comprehensive documentation.
  • • A key aspect of your role will be to improve and modernize existing data workflows. This means transitioning ad-hoc initiatives into structured, production-grade systems that are reliable and efficient.
  • • You will ensure that all systems built by the team are designed with long-term scalability and reliability as paramount considerations, contributing to the overall robustness of RoomPriceGenie's data infrastructure.
  • • Collaboration will be essential, and you will work closely with other Engineering Managers to ensure alignment on strategies, standards, and best practices across the engineering organization.
  • • You will contribute significantly to architectural decisions that have a company-wide impact on our data strategy, ensuring that the Market Data team's efforts are aligned with broader organizational goals.
  • • Promoting a culture of high data quality, clear ownership, and measurable outcomes will be a continuous focus, ensuring that the team's work delivers tangible value.
  • • Your technical engagement will remain active through participation in code reviews, architectural discussions, and, where appropriate, hands-on coding. This ensures you stay connected to the technical challenges and solutions being implemented.
  • • You will provide crucial support to engineers as they navigate and solve complex system design challenges, acting as a technical mentor and guide.
  • • Conducting regular one-on-one meetings, providing constructive feedback, and actively mentoring engineers in both their technical and professional development will be a core part of your leadership responsibilities.
  • • The role requires a proactive approach to building structure within a new or evolving environment, demonstrating a high degree of ownership while effectively balancing autonomy and accountability.
  • • You will leverage your solid experience as a Software or Data Engineer, with a proven track record of owning production systems, to guide the team effectively.
  • • Your expertise in Python (4+ years) will be essential for driving technical direction and contributing to code-based solutions.
  • • Experience in building and maintaining production-grade ETL/ELT pipelines within modern cloud data warehouses such as Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks, or Redshift is critical.
  • • Strong data modeling skills, including the creation of analytics-ready schemas, performance optimization techniques, and adherence to testing and documentation best practices, are expected.
  • • Proficiency with orchestrated data pipelines using tools like Dagster, Airflow, or similar is required.
  • • Excellent system design and architecture skills, with a keen focus on scalability and maintainability, will be crucial for developing robust data solutions.
  • • You will need to be an analytical and structured thinker, with a strong emphasis on long-term architectural vision.
  • • The ability to operate comfortably in ambiguous situations and translate them into clear, actionable plans is highly valued.
  • • A pragmatic yet quality-driven approach will ensure that solutions are both effective and robust.
  • • You will embody a collaborative, low-ego attitude, fostering trust and positive working relationships across teams.
  • • Fluency in English and a base within European time zones (UTC+0 / UTC+2) are essential for seamless team collaboration.
  • • Nice-to-have experience includes running regular 1:1s, formal people management, building data platforms from scratch, scaling engineering teams in high-growth settings, hands-on dbt experience, modernizing legacy pipelines, familiarity with Django/FastAPI, observability tools, distributed task queues, and cost-aware architecture in data-intensive systems.
