  • • As a Risk Strategist at Whatnot, you will be at the forefront of safeguarding our rapidly growing live shopping platform. This pivotal role demands a unique blend of analytical prowess, deep expertise in risk management and cybersecurity, and a proactive, operational mindset to identify, assess, and neutralize threats posed by malicious actors. You will be instrumental in ensuring the integrity and trustworthiness of our marketplace, fostering a secure environment for both buyers and sellers.
  • • Your core responsibilities will involve meticulous monitoring of trust and fraud trends across the platform. This includes delving into the root causes of emerging issues, analyzing patterns, and staying ahead of evolving threat landscapes. By tracking these trends, you will gain critical insights that inform proactive mitigation strategies.
  • • A significant part of your role will be dedicated to frontline investigations. You will develop, refine, and deploy sophisticated rules and policies designed to enforce Whatnot's terms of service and protect our community at scale. This requires a keen eye for detail and the ability to translate complex risk scenarios into actionable enforcement mechanisms.
  • • You will be a key architect in developing innovative strategies to enhance our bad actor detection and mitigation capabilities. This involves conceptualizing and implementing new tools, optimizing existing processes, and leveraging cutting-edge techniques to stay one step ahead of fraudsters.
  • • A critical function of this position is the continuous assessment of risk. You will evaluate the potential risks associated with new tools, features, and existing operational processes. Your recommendations for mitigating these identified risks will be crucial in maintaining a robust and secure platform.
  • • You will play an active role in managing our fraud controls. This involves close collaboration with our technology and operations teams to ensure that our trust and fraud control systems are effective, efficient, and aligned with business objectives.
  • • Performance tracking is paramount. You will diligently monitor the effectiveness of all trust and fraud strategies, tools, and processes. This data-driven approach will allow for continuous improvement and optimization, ensuring that our defenses remain strong and adaptable.
  • • Identifying opportunities for investment in trust and fraud protection, both in the short and long term, will be a key strategic objective. You will proactively seek out areas where enhanced security measures can provide significant value and reduce potential losses.
  • • A vital aspect of your role will be supporting new product launches and international expansions. This involves conducting thorough fraud risk analyses for new product offerings and geographical markets, and developing comprehensive mitigation strategies to address potential risks before and after launch, ensuring a smooth and secure rollout.
  • • You will work hand-in-hand with our dedicated Trust and Risk engineering teams, operations partners, and data scientists. This collaborative effort is essential to ensure that robust, long-term protections for our buyers and sellers are not only developed but also effectively codified and implemented within our systems.
  • • This role offers the flexibility to work remotely or from one of our global office hubs, with an emphasis on co-located time for strategic planning, collaborative problem-solving, and team connection. Successful candidates must reside within commuting distance of our New York, Seattle, Los Angeles, or San Francisco hubs, enabling seamless integration with our hybrid work model.
  • • We are seeking individuals with a low ego, a strong growth mindset, and a passion for driving high impact. If you are curious, responsible, and eager to develop creative solutions to complex risk challenges, you will thrive in this dynamic environment. Your ability to measure and monitor rule performance, statistically quantify risk and opportunity, and design innovative solutions through the optimization of existing controls and the exploration of new data sources will be key to your success.
