📋 Description

• Join CoLab Software Inc. as a Senior Back End Developer (Software Developer IV) on the Build Scale Team and become the technical force behind a platform that is accelerating the delivery of life-changing products. Every day, engineers at Ford, Komatsu, and Johnson Controls rely on CoLab’s cloud-based design-review platform to catch mistakes early, iterate faster, and ship years sooner. Your code will directly influence how thousands of mechanical engineers collaborate and innovate.
• Own the architecture and evolution of CoLab’s back-end services, ensuring they remain performant, secure, and ready to scale with explosive customer growth. You will design and implement RESTful and GraphQL APIs that power real-time collaborative design reviews, versioned CAD file management, and AI-assisted feedback loops. Expect to work with large-scale distributed systems, event-driven architectures, and high-throughput data pipelines.
• Translate complex customer problems into elegant technical solutions. You will partner daily with Product Managers, UX Designers, and front-end engineers to break down ambiguous requirements into clear, shippable increments. Your ability to ask the right questions, synthesize feedback, and propose pragmatic trade-offs will shape the roadmap and delight users.
• Champion clean, maintainable code and modern software development best practices. Through rigorous code reviews, pair programming, and architectural decision records (ADRs), you will raise the bar for quality across the entire engineering organization. You’ll introduce patterns for observability, automated testing, and continuous deployment that reduce mean time to recovery (MTTR) and increase release velocity.
• Mentor and elevate the team around you. As a technical leader, you will guide mid-level and junior developers, conduct knowledge-sharing sessions, and foster a culture of psychological safety where experimentation is encouraged. Your influence will extend beyond your immediate squad, contributing to guilds and guild-like communities of practice.
• Ship critical user-facing features on a predictable cadence. You will take end-to-end ownership—from writing design docs and unit tests to shepherding pull requests through production—ensuring every release meets CoLab’s high standards for reliability and performance. You’ll monitor production metrics, respond to incidents, and iterate rapidly based on real-world telemetry.
• Drive continuous improvement in scalability and cost efficiency. You will profile services, optimize database queries, and leverage horizontal scaling techniques to handle millions of CAD file versions and concurrent design sessions without breaking the bank. Your work will keep infrastructure costs aligned with business growth.
• Stay ahead of the curve. Evaluate emerging technologies—whether it’s new data stores, serverless patterns, or AI/ML tooling—and make pragmatic recommendations that give CoLab a competitive edge while minimizing technical debt.

🎯 Requirements

• 5+ years of back-end development experience in a SaaS or cloud-native environment
• Proven track record designing and maintaining highly scalable, distributed systems
• Expert-level proficiency in at least one modern back-end language (e.g., Python, Go, Java, Node.js)
• Deep understanding of RESTful and/or GraphQL API design, microservices, and event-driven architectures
• Experience with relational and NoSQL databases, data modeling, and query optimization
• Nice-to-have: exposure to CAD data formats, PLM systems, or mechanical engineering workflows
