📋 Description

• Senior Back End Engineer role focused on building and maintaining the systems that power iwoca’s German business, directly supporting internal teams in sales, credit, and collections to serve small businesses more effectively.
• You will own high-impact projects from problem identification through to delivery, designing and evolving backend services that improve operational workflows such as customer communication, underwriting, and collections, with tangible impact on daily operations.
• The DE Tech team is a growing, cross-functional engineering group within iwoca’s German market, building proprietary tools like CRM and underwriting systems used by over 300 colleagues, enabling faster, more reliable customer support through automation and architectural improvement.
• iwoca is a mission-driven fintech company that has provided over £4 billion in funding to 100,000+ SMEs, aiming to support one million small businesses in their defining moments through flexible finance and responsive technology.
• In this role, you will simplify workflows by identifying automation opportunities, evolve the architecture to ensure scalability and dependability, advocate for engineering quality through code reviews and design sessions, and expand your influence by leading projects end-to-end as part of a team developing emerging leaders.
• You will gain deep experience in backend system design, workflow optimization, and technical leadership, while contributing to a culture of learning and innovation that values both individual growth and team-wide improvement.

🎯 Requirements

• Proven track record in designing and building backend systems using Python, ideally with Django but open to other web frameworks such as FastAPI, Flask, or Ninja.
• Experience working with relational databases, ideally PostgreSQL but open to MySQL or similar, with an understanding of performance and maintainability considerations.
• Experience working on systems that support complex workflows, where data correctness and clear system behaviour matter.
• A track record of taking work from an initial problem through to delivery, including shaping solutions, making trade-offs, and iterating based on how systems are used.
• A drive to continually improve existing systems, not just building new ones, including simplifying and addressing long-standing pain points.
• Bonus: Familiarity with scaling internal tools or platforms used by large operational teams.
• Bonus: Full-stack flexibility, including contributing to front-end codebases with React or TypeScript.
• Bonus: Modern deployment experience with CI/CD pipelines or deployment workflows.
• Bonus: A data-driven mindset, using data or metrics to assess the impact of changes.
